On Saturday, the American Library Association Council officially adopted the Librarians and Library Workers' Bill of Rights. This landmark document establishes that the future of librarianship must be built on dignity, respect, equity, inclusion, and the opportunity for every library worker to thrive.
This achievement is the result of true collaboration. I extend my sincere gratitude to my co-authors for their expertise, insights, and unwavering commitment:
- Camina Raphaël-Lubin, Director of the Lakeview Public Library (New York)
- Kimberley Hrivnak, Chief Operating Officer, Allegheny County Library Association (Pennsylvania)
Special thanks go to Councilor Emily Bergman for her vital leadership and advocacy in bringing this document to the ALA Council floor. I also want to recognize the ALA Committee on Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility (EDIA), chaired by Nichelle Hayes, for their invaluable guidance and feedback.
Additionally, I deeply appreciate the support and contributions of the Office for Diversity, Literacy and Outreach Services (ODLOS), specifically Kevin Strowder and Aubrey Huff.
The adoption of this document reflects our collective commitment to creating workplaces where all library workers are valued, respected, supported, and empowered. Now, let us turn this commitment into action to build an equitable future for our entire profession.
