The Portland Public Library is seeking a Teen Librarian to join our Youth Services department. Our mission is to foster learning, discovery, and joy to enrich our diverse community and advance literacy for all ages. PPL has a dedicated Teen Library housed in our busy downtown location in the heart of Portland, Maine. We also provide library services to teens via our three library branches (one on an island!) and our bookmobile. Portland is home to three public high schools in addition to several private and charter schools. There are 53 languages spoken in our public schools, and 25% of our students are English Language Learners*. This full-time supervisory position offers the opportunity to work with and develop a creative, dedicated staff of two part-time library assistants dedicated entirely to teen services. The Teen team is charged with providing a safe, welcoming, developmentally appropriate library space for teenagers, sharing time on the public service desk assisting patrons and building relationships. The Teen Librarian works with their staff to continue to expand our community outreach, improve connections with schools and educators, collaborate with the community's many youth-serving organizations, and maintain vibrant, quality collections. Finally, the Teen Librarian will join a team already offering fun, skill-building, youth-driven programming for teens both in-person and online.
The ideal candidate will be a librarian with a master's degree in library science and two or more years of professional experience in a public library setting, at least one of which is at a supervisory or management level. Education professionals with demonstrated experience working with adolescents may also make strong candidates. The ability to work across departments and locations, and with community partners is essential to this position, as is demonstrated experience working with teens.
This is a 37.5 hour/week, full-time position Monday – Friday with regular Saturday rotations. The pay band begins at $24.15/hour at Grade 65 step 1. Excellent benefits include health, dental, and vision insurance, retirement options, and paid leave.
