Freelance job posting: young readers' reviewers for Kirkus Reviews

Kirkus Reviews is seeking people interested in reviewing young readers' titles (board books through young adult)!

    A brief overview:

We handle almost everything digitally. Reviewers fill out a survey that covers preferred age ranges, formats, genres, areas of personal or professional expertise, etc. The turnaround time is usually 2-4 weeks, depending on your preferred volume, and the reviews run approximately 235 words. Submission is handled via an online portal. Reviewers include page numbers for any factual references so editors can fact check. We compensate for reviews and can tell you the amount after your NDA paperwork is processed. You can browse samples here: https://www.kirkusreviews.com/discover-books/.

To apply, please write to Laura Simeon (lsimeon@kirkus.com for older middle grade and YA) or Mahnaz Dar (mdar@kirkus.com for board books through younger middle grade) or both of us (if your interests cross these age ranges). Please send:

    • a couple of sample reviews roughly in the Kirkus style (a blog post that runs a little longer is fine, ditto a library school assignment or links to your Goodreads reviews)
    • any information you are comfortable sharing about what awareness you would bring to our reviewer roster in terms of personal experience of any marginalized identities

Please also feel free to share this opportunity with any kid lit colleagues who may be interested.

    Thank you!
