The Nominating Committee of the Coretta Scott King Book Awards Committee (CSK) of the Ethnic and Multicultural Information Exchange Round Table (EMIERT) invites nominations for service on the Coretta Scott King Book Awards Jury, beginning January 1, 2023 to June 30, 2025. Attendance at the two ALA conferences is mandatory. Nominees for the jury must be members of EMIERT and have experience in the evaluation of children's and young adult literature. Self-nominations are welcome.
Again, this year the CSK Community will participate in the American Library Association (ALA) upcoming general elections scheduled March-April, 2022. The election for the Coretta Scott King Book Awards Jury will be conducted online along with all other ALA units and will appear as part of the Ethnic Materials Information Exchange Round Table (EMIERT) ballot.
Individuals interested in serving on the CSK Book Awards Jury are to compile applicant packets containing the following: a biographical sketch including a statement of interest and summary of involvement with the CSK Community (250 words or less), a curriculum vita, and book reviews or writing samples related to evaluation of children's literature.
Those who wish to be considered for candidacy must submit their packets to the Nominating Committee by November 1, 2021 to Dropbox. Candidates for election whose names will appear on the ballot will be notified by November 15, 2021 and must complete the process by submitting additional information in the elections system by December 1, 2021.
Since 1969, the Coretta Scott King Book Awards have been given annually to outstanding African American authors and illustrators of books for children and young adults who demonstrate an appreciation of Black culture and universal human values. The jury selects meritorious literary works deserving of such recognition.
First presented in 2010, the Coretta Scott King - Virginia Hamilton Award for Lifetime Achievement is named in memory of beloved children's author Virginia Hamilton. The award, given annually, recognizes the work of African-American authors and illustrators as well as those individuals whose ongoing advocacy introduces the work of African American authors and illustrators to children and young adults.
