  • To serve as a source of information on recommended ethnic collections, services, and programs.
  • To organize task forces, institutes, and workshops to carry out the functions of the Round Table as defined in the petition.
  • To develop for Annual conferences forums and symposia programs that deal with the key issues of ethnicity and librarianship.
  • To maintain a liaison with the Office of Library Outreach Services and cooperate with other ALA units, including the caucuses in joint projects for the betterment of outreach services.
  • To disseminate the work of the Round Table through a program of publications

    Dear EMIERT Membership,


     


    Thanks to our members who have reached out with questions about our new volunteer opportunities.  For those who need more information, please find below a list of our current Committees and Task Forces, including tasklists and timeframes:


    Directory of Libraries Serving Multicultural Populations Task Force


    Tasklist: Develop a list of public libraries in the United States that serve multicultural populations, identifying specific programs/services that serve this demographic. Create directory categories (i.e. U.S. region, culture) based on Task Force consensus. Timeline: October 2013 - June 2014.


     


    Electronic Communication Committee


    Tasklist:  update social media platforms (currently facebook and twitter) with information tied to our role as ALA's Ethnic and Multicultural Information Exchange Round Table. Balance content for membership groups; i.e. academic, public, school libraries, library and information science schools, special libraries.  Brainstorm and share ideas to create an EMIERT presence on Tumblr and Google + . Access our current social media accounts and browse the content. Content should not reflect personal/political/religious views. Explore content ideas to engage membership. Recruit members to live tweet and/or report out from conferences/programs related to EMIERT’s mission. Timeline : 2013 - 2015


     


    Membership Committee


    Tasklist: Compile monthly and yearly membership statistics in membership spreadsheet and code by member type (public library, school library, academic library etc.). Send monthly emails welcoming new members, thanking renewed/reinstated members and thanking dropped members for their recent membership. Provide reports to Vice-Chair for monthly Skype meetings and MidWinter and Annual Conferences. Recruit new members through NMRT, student associations and local/national conferences and listservs. Timeline: 2013 - 2015


     


    Guidelines for Outreach to Immigrant Populations Task Force


    Tasklist: Create a guiding document for libraries serving recent immigrant populations as defined by recent arrival data captured by the U.S. census. The guidelines will need to include an introductory paragraph that provides an overview of what the guidelines are, who the intended audience is and how they can be utilized.Guidelines will include principles to follow when developing services and programs for youth and adults within the library and community. Guidelines do not include extensive detail, tips, timelines, step-by-step plans, etc.  Use the format and structure of RUSA’s Guidelines for Development and Promotion of Multilingual Collections and Services http://www.ala.org/rusa/resources/guidelines/guidemultilingual for developing the guidelines. Timeline : November 2013 - June 2014


     


    Directory of Ethnic Archives Task Force


    Tasklist: Compile a list of academic libraries that house physical and/or digital archives specific to a particular ethnicity or culture. Create a brief summary of each collection including notable holdings and access information. Create directory categories (i.e. U.S. Region of libraries, world region of ethnicities, etc.) based on Task Force consensus.  Timeline: November 2013 - June 2014

    Tasklist: Create a guiding document for evaluating and selecting multicultural materials for youth and adults in public and school libraries. The guidelines will need to include an introductory paragraph that provides an overview of what the guidelines are, who the intended audience is and how they can be utilized. Guidelines will define principles to follow when evaluating and selecting multicultural materials.     Great Electronic Resources for English Language Learners Task Force


    Tasklist: Develop a list of electronic resources including apps, interactive web spaces and websites that effectively help non-native English language speakers learn and develop English language proficiency and facility in navigating American culture. Define and develop categories based on Task Force consensus.
