Project Look Sharp, AASL's partner in our IMLS planning grant - ML3: Librarians as Leaders for Media Literacy, is offering a 2nd version of its well-received online course: Empowering All Students Through Media Decoding. It trains school librarians in Constructivist Media Decoding (CMD) – a student-centered, curriculum-driven, question-based methodology (with materials) for P-12 integration. The course includes 2 live online sessions with the creators of CMD, 4 interactive self-paced modules, and individual coaching as participants create their own media decoding activity and teach it with students.
When this course was offered a year ago, we immediately had far more applicants than the 40 slots. Since then, the course has been hosted by state and regional school library systems and departments of education in Rhode Island, Pennsylvania, Washington, and in multiple regions of New York state. The feedback has been very positive. ML3 is currently piloting PD for graduates of the course to lead media literacy integration in their districts and states – to give all students habits of critical thinking about all media messages.
Attached is a flyer about the course.
