AASL Town Hall | Conference Connections - Takeaways from AASL 2023
At 6:00 p.m. Central on November 1, you're invited to join your colleagues in conversation about highlights from the AASL 2023 National Conference. Whether you were able to attend in person or not, we hope that you will take part in this opportunity to build relationships with each other over topics and ideas that were shared and discussed during this unique professional learning opportunity that focuses solely on school librarianship.
AASL's exploration of the Shared Foundations concludes with Curate
Published by AASL and ALA Editions, "Curate" helps to connect learners to resources in more thoughtful, meaningful ways. Through teaching learners and other educators to curate-to overcome their own biases to find, organize, and share the best information-school librarians build connections between learners, knowledge, and the world. Written by Daniella LaShaun Smith and Len Bryan, this practical guide features lesson starters, case studies, and best practices that demonstrate inspiring and effective strategies.
AASL Awards and Grants Open
Applications are now open for AASL's 2024 awards and grants. AASL members are encouraged to nominate a colleague or themselves to be lauded for their outstanding talent and dedication to the profession as part of this prestigious awards program. AASL awards and grants recognize excellence and showcase best practices in the school library field in categories that include collaboration, leadership, and innovation.
AASL Standards Community Survey-Open November 6-20, 2023
AASL is launching new research into the supporting content and material of the National School Library Standards with a set of online surveys for school librarians, collaborators, and AASL Chapters. More than eight years ago, AASL embarked on the journey to develop the National School Library Standards for Learners, School Librarians, and School Libraries. These new standards marked a critical milestone for the school library field which activated school librarians and connections across the educational landscape. The periodic review and evaluation of content and materials that support school librarians and educational leaders implementing national standards is an important activity of the association. The online survey phase of the research is the most inclusive and your best opportunity to influence future planning and content to strengthen further adoption of the standards and advocacy for the role of school librarians! It is critical we hear from you and your communities-you continue to be the foundation of our work! Watch your e-mail and AASL social media channels for updates. Visit standards.aasl.org/research for more information on how you can contribute.

AASL President Courtney Pentland Blogs on Parental Rights for Human Rights Campaign
Along with several ways parents can be involved in their children's reading lives, Pentland shares: "The school library is where students can explore materials that support their learning needs and personal interests. It is also a place where parental rights are upheld, and where every family's values and beliefs are respected. Restricting all students' access to materials based on specific groups' beliefs and values takes away the parental rights of others."
