Membership in the AASL Chapters Forum is open to all and may include the state-level school library association’s president/chair, other officers, conference chair, etc. Past Delegates and other interested stakeholders from the association may join the forum. This space provides an opportunity to share, discuss and ask questions from chapter colleagues across the country.

    Amanda Kordeliski Elected 2025-2026 AASL President

    AASL has announced the results of its 2024 election. Members elected Amanda Kordeliski, Director of Libraries and Instructional Technology for Norman Public Schools in Oklahoma, as the 2024-2025 President-Elect. She will serve as the AASL President during the 2025-2026 term and immediate Past President in 2026-2027. The AASL ballot also included seven (7) amendments to the AASL Bylaws that were passed by the vote of the membership.

     

     

    "The First Amendment and the Freedom to Read" receives AASL Roald Dahl's Miss Honey Social Justice Award

    "The First Amendment and the Freedom to Read" project from Townsend Harris High School in Flushing, NY, is the recipient of the 2024 AASL Roald Dahl's Miss Honey Social Justice Award. Sponsored by Penguin Young Readers, a division of Penguin Random House, the award recognizes collaboration between school librarians and teachers in the instruction of social justice using school library resources.

     

    AASL Town Hall Shares the Gift of Story
    During the AASL Town Hall at 6:00 p.m. Central on May 7, AASL President Courtney Pentland will be joined by John Schu, author of The Gift of Story: Exploring the Affective Side of the Reading Life. They will lead a conversation about his book which invites readers to consider literacy beyond its academic benefits, highlighting the ways story speaks to our hearts and brings us together. 

    Webinar Explores the Mental Health Impact of Climate Change on Young People

    At 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday, May 1, join us for an interactive webinar with the Climate Mental Health Network to learn about the mental health impacts of climate change, especially to young people. You'll also learn about resources, books, and other programs to use in your work to help patrons navigate their climate emotions. This webinar is offered by ALA Sustainability Roundtable in collaboration with AASL.

    Wendy Gassaway receives AASL Innovative Reading Grant
    Wendy Gassaway, school librarian at Alder Elementary School in Portland, Oregon, is the recipient of the 2024 AASL Innovative Reading Grant. Sponsored by Capstone, the $2,500 grant supports the planning and implementation of a unique and innovative program for children that motivates and encourages reading, especially with struggling readers.

     

     

    Gabriela Gualano receives AASL Frances Henne Award
    Gabriela Gualano, teacher librarian at Paul Revere Middle School in Los Angeles, California, is the recipient of the 2024 AASL Frances Henne Award. Sponsored by Bloomsbury Libraries Unlimited, the $1,250 award recognizes a school librarian with five years or less experience who demonstrates leadership qualities with students, teachers, and administrators.

    Human Rights Campaign Foundation Presents Time to THRIVE Summit in Upper Midwest

    Taking place May 18, 2024, in Minneapolis, the summit was founded with the goal of building a strong network of supportive adults to ensure LGBTQ+ youth don't simply survive, but THRIVE. It is a convening to build awareness and cultural competency, learn current and emerging best practices, gather resources from leading experts and organizations in the field, and connect adult allies on the ground with regional approach. 

    The Children's Book Council Releases 2024 FAVORITES

    The books on the annual FAVORITES lists are new books read and rated by thousands of children, teachers, and librarians in rural, suburban, and urban schools and libraries across the U.S. every year. Lists include books for Children's, Middle Grade, Young Adult and books chosen by Teachers and Librarians.

    Three Speak Up Surveys Available Through May 31

    Speak Up is currently offering three opportunities to survey stakeholders, gain insight into their views and unlock the power of data. The surveys will close May 31.

    • Generative AI in K12 Education Snapshot Survey: Join educators, school leaders, and district administrators in exploring their perspectives on this quickly evolving issue.
    • Speak Up Leader Survey: Aligned with the new National Educational Technology Plan (NETP), this gauges your readiness to close the digital access, use, and design divides.

    Project Tomorrow Releases Key Findings From the 2022-23 Speak up Research Project

    Project Tomorrow, in collaboration with Spectrum Enterprise®, will be releasing a series of reports to support the release of the new National Educational Technology Plan. In the first report in the special series, Project Tomorrow examines the state of the digital access divide in America's classrooms through the eyes and experiences of K-12 teachers and students: Unfinished Business: Understanding the Digital Access Divide in American Schools.
