Membership in the AASL Chapters Forum is open to all and may include the state-level school library association’s president/chair, other officers, conference chair, etc. Past Delegates and other interested stakeholders from the association may join the forum. This space provides an opportunity to share, discuss and ask questions from chapter colleagues across the country.

    AASL Webinar: Building Relationships with Student Advocates

    Please join us tonight at 6:00 p.m. Central for a webinar focusing on how to build relationships with students who are interested in speaking up on behalf of school libraries. A panel of students who have been involved in efforts around the country will share their stories and give practical advice on how to work with students who are interested in becoming more involved in advocating for school libraries and school librarians.

     

    AASL Collaborate Project selected for ALA Emerging Leader Work

    Developing Creative Collaborators, Flexible Partners, and Resilient Citizens has been selected as a part of the 2024 ALA Emerging Leaders program. AASL's project tasks an Emerging Leaders team to develop materials that support professional development and instruction around the National School Library Standards Shared Foundation of Collaborate. Earlier projects focused on the Shared Foundations can be found on the AASL Standards web portal.

     

    AASL STEM Special Event Grants Awarded

    Five STEM Special Event Grants have been awarded by AASL. Supported by the Danaher Foundation, the STEM Special Event Grant Program supports a special event to increase student engagement by providing direct assistance funding to middle or high school libraries for special short-term projects or events that would engage students to promote STEM education and student interest in a career in the STEM field. Each recipient will receive a $3,000 grant to fund their project or event.

    Library of Congress and ALA Announce New Educational Series

    ALA Editions is pleased to announce a new educational series, "Discover and Learn with the Library of Congress," to be published in association with the Library of Congress." Combining facsimiles of primary sources from the Library's unparalleled collections with background information and teaching strategies, titles in the series will present classroom-ready materials for teachers, librarians, and home educators working with grades 6–12. The series will be promoted by ALA Editions in partnership with AASL.

    Mia Gittlen and Dawn Shirk selected as 2024 AASL Emerging Leaders

    Mia Gittlen and Dawn Shirk have been selected as the two participants sponsored by AASL in 2024 ALA Emerging Leaders program. The Emerging Leaders program enables library workers from across the country to participate in problem-solving work groups, network with peers, and have an opportunity to serve the profession in a leadership capacity. Gittlen is currently the K-8 Head Librarian at Redwood Day School in Oakland and Shirk is in her third year as a Library Media Specialist at Guilford County Schools in Greensboro.

    On School Librarians United, Amy Hermon interviews AASL and ALA Editions authors Susan D. Ballard and Sara Kelly Johns about their new book, Elevating the School Library: Building Positive Perceptions through Brand Behavior. In podcast episode 257 "Building a Brand," this resonant conversation spans topics such as brand strategies from the business world, embracing the service culture of school libraries, building a personal brand versus a school library brand, the value of observational data collection, and using scenarios to view brand challenges.

    Sophie Blackall Revealed as Illustrator of 2024 Children's Book Week Poster

    The 2024 Children's Book Week poster by the incomparable Sophie Blackall reflects the theme, No Rules. Just Read. School libraries can receive two free copies of the poster by signing up to participate in Children's Book Week during one of the two dedicated weeks of celebration in 2024: May 6-12 or November 4-10. Children's Book Week is presented by Every Child a Reader, Children's Book Council's 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization.

     

     

    HRC Foundation Webinar Examines the 2023 Youth Report: Black LGBTQ+ Youth

    The webinar taking place Tuesday, February 20th at 3:00 p.m. Central will feature a discussion between Black LGBTQ+ youth and Black youth-serving professionals about key data points from the Black LGBTQ+ Youth Report. Attendees will leave the webinar with a better understanding of the issues that affect Black LGBTQ+ youth and the different ways that they talk about their identities and their experiences.

    Project Look Sharp Offers Complimentary Course on Constructivist Media Decoding
    As a benefit of AASL's partnership with Project Look Sharp on the IMLS project ML3: Librarians as Leaders for Media Literacy, K-12 school librarians are eligible for the complimentary online course "Empowering All Students Through Media Decoding." This 9-week self-paced course is designed to teach school librarians how to lead effective media decoding with students and colleagues. The course begins March 7 and those who complete the course will earn 15 hours of PD (which may be eligible for CTLEs or the equivalent) and a letter to their principal or superintendent about the training. To apply, email looksharp@ithaca.edu.  

    2024 Outstanding Science Trade Book Award Winners

    The Children's Book Council along with a National Science Teaching Association selection committee has released the 2024 Outstanding Science Trade Book Award Winners. This annual resource provides educators with a list of the best science books published in the past year. The CBC has created a spreadsheet to easily sort and check lists against collections and a PDF complete with reviewer annotations created by NSTA.

    What Do K-12 Teachers Need to Support Digital Teaching in Their Classroom Today?

    A new infograhic from Project Tomorrow: Speak Up shares resources, support and professional learning needed by K-12 teachers nationwide. As learning continues to includes more digital tools, content, and resources than ever before; teachers are developing new ideas and mindsets about the value of using online instructional materials to support student learning. School librarians can use the infographic to identify needs and offer their digital learning skills to other educators in their schools.
