When "A Nation at Risk" was issued it ignored libraries. "A Nation at Risk" is 40 years old now so there have been stories about it in the news today.
Librarians responded with "Alliance for Excellence" and the report, "Libraries and the Learning Society."
It is interesting to note how expansively librarians responded.

In response to the National Commission on Excellence in Education's Report, "A Nation, at Risk," the Department of Education's Center for Libraries and Education Improvement, Office of Educational Research and Improvement, invited leaders inthe library and information science community to a meeting in September 1983 to
help launch a project to be known as "Libraries and the Learning Society."
