AASL Retirees Task Force

On behalf of the AASL Retirees Task Force, of which I am a member, I would like to find out if your Affiliate has a retirees group (may be an affiliiate of your state organization).  If so, could you share the contact information for that person?  Also what, if aything, do your retirees contribute to your association? Do you reduce their dues?   What else can you share aobut these members?

We plan on sharing what we learn so that affiliates can adapt/adopt ideas they think will work for them.  We expect to do much more as well, but we are  just getting started.

Yes, we do have an option to be a retired member of FAME.  Each year the member must renew the membership just like any other member.  An active membership is $60 and a retired membership is $35.  The best person to contact would be Vic Burke.  He is still very active and knowledgeable about our organization.  vic.burke@marion.k12.fl.us  Hope this helps!

    Hi Hilda,

MSLA has retired members. They pay a reduced rate for their dues - $20 vs. $40 for working professionals. We set up a separate listserv for them and at one time had a retirees' liaison on our executive board. We had hoped to get our retirees involved in some way - possibly in advocacy initiatives or mentoring new members -  but it never took off. I'll be interested to hear what others have to share about ways to get retirees to participate. Ours seem to be enjoying retirement too much!  ;-)

The New York Library Association has a retiree's roundtable. I believe Bernie Tomasso a retired school librarian is the chair. You can contact him at btomasso@twcny.rr.com

TN has a retired members roundtable. Or at least we are working on it. Clara Hasbrouck is the chair and can be reached at chasbro at earthlink dot net. Our dues are currently $30 and retirees pay $15. We have been recognizing our retirees at conference and trying to encourage them to stay involved.

Illinois reduces membership rates in ISLMA from $65 to $40, but we don't have a roundtable or any other type of group.

NCSLMA offers retirees a membership deal - $75.00 for lifetime membership.  We don't have any retiree round tables or groups within our organization though.

Indiana has a reduced retired librarian membership rate (in ILF - Indiana Library Federation) from $85 to $45.  We do not have a roundtable or liason for this group.

Missouri does not have a retired librarian group, but we offer benefits to keep those key professionals engaged in our association. Conference registration is reduced and waived altogether for those who volunteer to help with at least two conference events. Retiree membership dues are 1/2 what they are for renewing members.          In Pennsylvania, we have 2 membership categories for retired members.  One is Retired Active, which is the same price as an Active Membership at $50 a year.  This type of membership affords all the benefits of the association.  The second category is Retired Associate which costs only $25 a year, but does not allow for voting privileges.
Many of our retirees are still very active.  Some serve on the Legislative Committee as Event Planners for the PSLA Legislator @ Your Library Campaign (See the following address:  http://www.psla.org/index.php/legislation/legislator-your-library-campaign), while others serve on various sub-committees of the Conference Committee. They are a vital component of our committee structure.

Minnesota offers a reduced rate membership to retirees, $20 per year or $100 for a lifetime membership.  We do not have a special listserv or group for retired members at this time.

Our state affiliate is the Kansas Association of School Librarians (KASL) which does offer a reduced membership rate of $10.00 instead of the regular rate of $30.00. Although there is not a group for retirees, retired members are often very active and hold state council positions. However, there is not a reduced conference registration rate.
