  • 1.  AASL Affiliates turn a new Chapter

During the 2020 ALA Midwinter Meeting in Philadelphia, the American Association of School Librarians (AASL) Affiliate Assembly voted to adopt the term Chapters for state and regional school library associations. The change in name better reflects the relationship of AASL to state and regional school library associations and aligns with other similar entities within ALA. It also reflects recommendations made by the Steering Committee on Organizational Effectiveness (SCOE) in their reimagined ALA governance model.

"Organizations grow and change, and sometimes a change in terminology is needed to clarify the relationships of subsidiary units within the larger whole," explained AASL President Mary Keeling. "ALA, and several divisions within ALA, already designate state-level associations as 'chapters.' AASL, in changing the name of this body, is simply aligning our practice with that of our colleagues."

"I'm excited to start a new decade with a new name for Affiliate Assembly," said Blake Hopper, chair of the chapter coordinating team. "During the Affiliate Assembly meeting at Midwinter, it was unanimously decided to change our name to Chapters as it would help us better align with ALA."

AASL Chapters bring matters occurring at the state and local level to the national-level attention of the AASL Board of Directors. In addition, Chapters put forward programs, events, or products supportive of school libraries for formal commendation from AASL. Chapters also provide communication to and from the national organization through resource distribution and visits from AASL leadership.

    Hey Hilda,

    Affiliates are now Chapters.
Our meetings will be called Chapter Meetings.
ALA is using the word assembly for their groups.

    Have a good week!

I'd love to hear from other states. We have regional affiliates in our state association - Pennsylvania School Librarians Association - for example, the South Central Pennsylvania School Librarians Association, etc.  Our language in our by-laws refers to affiliates.

Are other states considering changing these to chapters as well since we ourselves will be a chapter so that the language and titles are parallel?

In NJ we have NJEA, NJLA, ISTE, and AASL among our Affiliates.  Affiliates are not directly part of your association -- as I understand it.  But the nomenclature I would think is up to you.

    Hilda-
Maybe I should clarify. Within our school library association we have regional groups that have formed as affiliates of our school library association. They form by region since they meet locally. I was wondering if any other AASL Chapters have that and if so do you think you'll consider changing their names as well to chapters to follow what we will now be called.

NJ has its county groups which we call affiliates and I guess we would have to think if we want to call them chapters. AASL, AECT, ISTE, and NJEA are "formal affiliates," and then we have Liaisons to NJLA, NJDOE, and other similar organizations.
