    The Tompkins County Public Library Board of Directors seeks an enthusiastic, visionary, community-minded leader as its next Library Director. The successful candidate will demonstrate strong leadership skills, exhibit a clear vision and commitment to librarianship and community engagement, articulate and advocate the Library’s strategic directions, provide sound fiscal management, promote proactive leadership in technology integration and promote collaborative relationships within the Library and throughout the community.

    The Library, a 501(c) (3) nonprofit organization, has an annual budget of $4,004,856 supported by county funding with additional support from the Town of Ithaca, the Tompkins County Public Library Foundation and the Friends of the Tompkins Public Library. Tompkins County Public Library, chartered to serve the county of 101,950, serves as the Central Library of the Finger Lakes Library System’s thirty-three libraries in five counties. The Library was originally founded by Ezra Cornell in 1864 as the Cornell Library Association and served as the first site of classes, faculty meetings and graduation of Cornell University. The current beautiful 66,747square-foot Library facility is at present undergoing renovations to add a new 21st Century Digital Lab, Makerspace and a new Teen Center as a result of a successful $3.57 million fundraising campaign. In 2016, the dedicated and award- winning staff (42.41 FTE) provided services to close to 400,000 visitors, circulated 816,517 items, hosted more than 33,200 attendees for programs and offered more than one million online interactions through the library website, the ‘TCPL to Go’ library app, catalog, digital collections internet and wireless access.

    Responsibilities The Library Director has overall responsibility for administration of staff, resources and resource development, long range planning, service delivery, comprehensive programs, government relations, public and community relations, fiscal affairs, personnel and labor relations. Responsible for leading the Library to respond both positively and rapidly to changing community needs and demographics. Responsible for organizational development, contract negotiations and staff development. Responsible for fundraising, facilitating and maintaining close working relationships with the Tompkins County Legislature, Tompkins County Public Library Foundation, The Friends of the Tompkins County Public Library, and the City and Town of Ithaca.

    Requirements Graduation from an ALA Accredited school or program with a graduate degree in library or information studies and possession of, or eligibility for, a New York State Public Librarian’s Professional Certificate and eight years of satisfactory professional library experience in a library of recognized standing, two years of which must have been in an administrative capacity.
    Other preferred qualifications include: experience reporting to a governing board, successful fundraising skills, experience working with budgets, construction and/or renovation experience, and working effectively with government officials and other public constituencies.
