    The Harrell Health Sciences Library: Research & Learning Commons seeks a dynamic and innovative Librarian to support the expanding Penn State College of Medicine (COM), University Park Regional Campus [State College, PA]. Reporting to the Harrell HSL Associate Dean & Director, the incumbent will be embedded at the regional medical campus. The incumbent will provide a broad range of information services and will take a leadership role in developing and enhancing the library’s educational program and coordinate instructional activities to support students, faculty, staff, and researchers located at the regional medical campus. This is a three-year non-tenure track, fixed-term, renewable faculty appointment.

    Position Summary:

    The Health Sciences Librarian will partner with the Harrell HSL administration to plan and build a comparable program of support and services at the regional medical campus that actively positions the library as a key resource and extends the reach of the Harrell HSL in support of the COM regardless of location. The selected candidate will lead the overall coordination of library-related instructional activities for the regional medical campus and the integration of EBM into the curriculum. Additionally, the Librarian will work in partnership with the COM faculty to design, develop, implement and teach a variety of classes, workshops and course-integrated instruction. The librarian will expand services by designing and developing online tutorials, providing individual consultations and orientations; serve as a source of expertise and support for the assessment and implementation for new and existing instructional technologies used in teaching and learning; participate in collection development activities; provide in-depth reference and consultation service; participate in library orientation for new medical students and residents; and will successfully function as Harrell HSL’s sole liaison to the regional medical campus.

    Other responsibilities include daily oversight of the library satellite operations, services, and collections as they develop at the regional medical campus; evaluating new and existing library programs, services and resources; contributing to the assessment of user needs; participating in marketing and planning; collaborating with librarians in related subject areas libraries/departments at University Park, including Life Sciences and other STEM libraries; and contributing to the profession through librarianship, teaching and learning, service, research, and involvement in professional organizations. Critical skills needed for this position include leadership skills and the ability to function independently as well as effectively in a team environment; the ability to strategically develop relationships vital for expanding library services, technology skills; a self-starter mentality, flexibility and the capacity to embrace change in a diverse, dynamic, and evolving organization; and strong communication skills to enhance cross-departmental initiatives.

    Required Qualifications:
    Requires a Masters of Library Science degree from an ALA-accredited institution (or equivalent); some experience in the medical library environment; knowledge of evidence based practice principles and aware of current trends in academic health sciences libraries; experience designing and delivering instruction/training; knowledge of and experience with health/STEM databases and resources including excellent literature searching skills; ability to work independently and effectively across organizational lines and in collaboration with colleagues to build strong relationships; excellent oral and written communication skills; strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision making skills; and strong leadership and organizational skills with a commitment to diversity.     Preferred Qualifications:

    Preferred qualifications include understanding the principles of adult learning and training; an undergraduate or graduate degree in a biomedical or physical science field or graduate-level coursework; and active membership or working toward membership in the Academy of Health Information Professionals.

    Penn State Hershey, located approximately 100 miles from University Park, is the medical campus of Penn State University. The Harrell Health Sciences Library: Research & Learning Commons, located on the Penn State Hershey campus, is the health sciences library for Penn State University. Penn State College of Medicine confers the doctor of medicine degree and in conjunction with Penn State's Graduate School, offers a variety of doctoral, masters, and graduate certificate programs in the biomedical sciences. The recently established Physician Assistant Master’s Program inaugural graduating class of 2016 achieved a 100 percent national board pass rate as first-time test takers of the Physician Assistant National Certifying Exam.

    The University Park Regional Campus of Penn State College of Medicine is a collaborative effort between Penn State Hershey, Mount Nittany Health and other local State College providers. The regional medical campus offers a wide spectrum of medical education opportunities, including clerkships, electives and acting internships for Penn State medical students. The regional medical campus is expanding and will be accepting the inaugural class for the new competency based curriculum currently under development, fall 2017. The University Park Regional Campus is set in the State College metropolitan area, a university town located in central Pennsylvania. State College offers a vibrant community with outstanding recreational facilities, a low crime rate, and excellent public schools. The campus is within a half-day drive to Washington D.C., Baltimore, Philadelphia, New York City, or Pittsburgh. The University Park Airport is served by three major carriers with flights to Washington D.C., Philadelphia, Chicago and Detroit.
