    Hartnell College Library in Salinas, California, serves the information, learning, teaching, and technology needs of its community college service population. Librarians at the main campus provide reference assistance to all campuses via telephone and email. The 68,000-square-foot technology-rich building features more than 200 computers, collaborative (group) study rooms, a distance learning lab, an Information Competency Center, a Professional Development Center, RFID self-check stations, universal access design and assistive technologies. The main campus library is open 64 hours per week during the spring and fall semesters. Librarians deliver over 100 orientations to more than 3,000 students annually, and provide information competency instruction in credit courses.


    The Position
    Under the general direction of the area dean or appropriate administrator, the Student Services Librarian will be responsible for coordination of library public services including reference, information literacy instruction, circulation, reserves, and outreach services. T his librarian is expected to design and conduct curriculum-integrated instructional sessions, provide reference and research consultations, collaborate with faculty to embed information literacy into the curriculum, and build sustainable partnerships to best serve student needs. The position will participate in and extend the Libraries’ outreach and assessment initiatives; teach general library instruction sessions and workshops, and develop effective online instructional materials. This assignment may include day, evening, or weekend hours at any of the college’s campus sites.

    Representative Duties
    Plan, assess, and coordinate library student services at all campus locations, including operations and policies related to circulation, reserve, media, reference, and interlibrary loans;
    Plan, develop, revise, implement, and coordinate library curriculum;
    Collaborate with faculty to integrate library resources in the curriculum;
    Coordinate, select, and evaluate the reference collection
    Oversee library collection maintenance;
    Participate in collection development in assigned disciplines
    Plan, schedule, coordinate, and deliver instruction in the use of the library resources at all campus locations and through the campus learning management system;
    Collaborate with the Lead Librarian in planning and scheduling reference services;
    Perform scheduled reference service, including evening and weekend hours.
    Coordinate training and scheduling of public services personnel for consistent and effective library services;
    Collaboratively develop and assess service area outcomes for library services and student learning outcomes for library courses;
    Use the results of service learning and student learning outcome assessment to make improvements;
    Participate in assignments and activities that support accreditation, institutional planning, and institutional effectiveness;
    Participate in college governance, including serving on various committees;
    Represent the college in regional library consortia and participate in professional organizations;
    Participate in faculty recruitment and peer evaluation;
    Collegially participate in department, college, and discipline-specific activities;
    Attend faculty meetings, college assemblies, professional development and orientation activities, and other meetings as called by the dean, vice president, superintendent/president, or designee.

    Ability to utilize technology in the delivery of instruction and willingness to explore new technologies for instruction and learning;
    Knowledge of institutional accreditation, planning, and continuous quality improvement;
    Knowledge of and commitment to the California Community College mission;
    Demonstrated sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students and the community at-large.



    Qualifications
    Education and Experience:
    Master’s degree in library science, or library and information science OR the equivalent.

    Desired Qualifications:
    Recent professional experience in information competency instruction and reference services in an academic library.
    A strong orientation to service, knowledge of trends and standards in community college libraries.
    Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
    Ability to establish and maintain effective and collegial working relationships with colleagues, students, faculty, and staff.
    Experience in teaching library courses in an online environment.
    Experience in providing library orientations and reference services in an academic library.
    Experience and knowledge in library collection development and maintenance.

    Conditions of Employment

    Full-time, tenure-track, student services librarian position beginning January 17, 2017.
    Starting faculty salary range: $53,906 to $76,575 annually based on 175 days per academic year. Within this salary range, the successful candidate’s starting salary will be based on verified education and teaching experience.
    District provides health benefits, which currently consist of full coverage for medical, dental, and vision insurance for employee and a high percentage of coverage for eligible dependents.

    Valid California driver’s license required.


    All offers of employment are contingent upon approval by the Board of Trustees, receipt of official transcripts verifying the degree stipulated under the minimum qualifications section, employment verification, and any other pertinent documentation. Individual selected is required to be fingerprinted and must submit to a tuberculosis examination.
