    The Virginia Commonwealth University Libraries invites applications and nominations for the position of Public Affairs Research Librarian to serve as liaison to the L. Douglas Wilder School of Government and Public Affairs with programs in criminal justice, homeland security, public administration, and urban studies. The successful candidate will join a culturally and academically diverse faculty of the highest caliber.


    Located in culturally diverse, historic, and dynamic Richmond, Virginia, convenient to the beauty of the Blue Ridge Mountains and the recreation destinations of the Atlantic Ocean and the Chesapeake Bay, Virginia Commonwealth University is one of Virginia's largest universities and among the nation's leading research institutions. The VCU Libraries, one of Virginia’s outstanding research library systems, advances the University’s teaching, research, service, and patient care mission with comprehensive print and digital journal, database, and reference collections with nationally prominent collections in the health and biological sciences, social work, the arts, the history of medicine, and comic and book arts.
    Responsibilities
    Reporting to the Head of Academic Outreach, the Public Affairs Research Librarian will actively build and maintain relationships with faculty, students, and administrative units within the Wilder School. They will provide course integrated instruction, workshops, individual consultations, and research assistance. They will actively pursue outreach opportunities to promote library services and advance research and learning for public affairs faculty and students. They will ensure reference collections are relevant to evolving public affairs research demands by actively monitoring scholarship in the field and the curriculum and research interests of the faculty. Academic Outreach Librarians are expected to contribute beyond their subject area by providing collaborative and cross-disciplinary support for departmental and library-wide outreach activities. Academic Outreach librarians are expected to be active professionally and to contribute to developments in the field. Faculty with VCU Libraries are evaluated and promoted on the basis of job performance, scholarship, and professional development and service.
    Qualifications
    Required: ALA-accredited graduate degree or accredited graduate degree in another appropriate discipline. Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU.
    Preferred: Graduate-level degree in a social sciences related discipline. Two or more years of public services experience in an academic library. Experience teaching in a classroom setting and providing in depth research assistance. Familiarity with specialized research sources and methods for public affairs. An interest in mapping and GIS applications. Experience working with web authoring tools including LibGuides and developing promotional materials. Ability to work in a fast-paced, service-oriented, and collaborative environment. Evidence of successful project management skills and the ability to plan and implement programs. Proven ability to meet deadlines and manage competing priorities under pressure. Evidence of creativity, initiative, and flexibility when working independently and on teams. Ability to work professionally with faculty. Excellent oral and written communication skills.
    Salary commensurate with experience, not less than $50,000 annually. This is a full-time, non-tenured faculty position. Normal faculty benefits apply, including 24 vacation days annually and choice of retirement and annuity plans. For more information about benefits, see VCU Human Resources.
