    Education Librarian


    The University of Alabama Libraries seeks a proactive, team-oriented, and innovative person to serve as an Education Librarian. The ideal candidate will have the ability to work collaboratively and creatively with Libraries faculty and University faculty to plan, develop, and deliver library instruction and outreach to students and faculty in The University of Alabama College of Education (CoE) (http://education.ua.edu/). S/he must have a willingness for continual learning, development, and application of additional expertise in these areas through work-related experiences and professional development opportunities. This position reports up through the Branch Libraries but works throughout the University Libraries as needs demand.


    Responsibilities include, but are subject to the needs and resources of the University Libraries:



    • Serve as liaison to the Education Leadership, Policy, and Technology Studies; Educational Studies in Psychology, Research Methodology, and Counseling; Kinesiology; and Special Education and Multiple Abilities departments within the CoE.

    • Develop a robust instruction program as well as collections and services to support to the faculty, students, and staff of the CoE.

    • Markets current and expanding collections and resources to CoE faculty and staff

    • Teach students digital literacies effectively that include the use of technologies and apps in the K-20 classroom.

    • Provide general reference services in-person and via email and chat.

    • Participate in information literacy instruction that supports the general curriculum.

    • Participates in collection development decisions.

    • Engage with instruction and services for distance learners.

    • Provide periodic reporting on liaison and teaching activities.

    • Responsibilities of the position evolve as the library environment continues to change.


    Qualifications:


    Required:



    • ALA-accredited Master’s in Library and Information Science/Studies (completed no later than August 2016).

    • Strong academic background in the disciplines of education.

    • Experience with education and social sciences electronic and print resources.

    • Experience working with a Learning Management System.

    • Demonstrated awareness of changing reference and research services environments.

    • Knowledge of current collection development issues.

    • Excellent communications skills, both verbal and written along with skills associated with listening, negotiating, compromising, and adapting.

    • Friendly, approachable, public service attitude.

    • Ability to support and enhance a diverse learning and working environment.



    • Demonstration of ability, interest, and willingness to assume additional and/or new responsibilities, along with the ability to set and model high performance standards.

    • Ability to conceptualize, articulate, and implement short and long range goals.

    • Ability to work independently and as a team member to solve problems, using sound judgment in decision-making.



    • Ability to meet requirements for tenure and promotion.


    Preferred:



    • Experience working in an academic or research library.

    • Experience using Blackboard.

    • Experience providing reference services.

    • Teaching experience.

    • Advanced degree in the social sciences, education, or a related discipline.

    • Demonstrated experience using educational technologies and teaching apps

    • Demonstrated professional development activity.

    • Familiarity with issues related to scholarly communication, e.g., copyright, authors’ rights, open access, etc.

    • Knowledge of library/academic information technologies and current research trends in education, e.g., digital scholarship, demand-driven collection development, quantitative and qualitative research methods, classroom technologies, mobile apps.
