    Minimum Qualifications:


    ALA-accredited Master's Degree in Information or Library Science or equivalent
    Experience with standards for bibliographic and authority data (e.g. MARC, AACR2, RDA, LCSH, LCC)
    Experience with OCLC Connexion
    Familiarity with integrated library system
    Excellent organizational and written skills


    Preferred Qualifications:


    Two years of recent original cataloging experience
    Experience cataloging in an academic or very large public library
    Knowledge of Ex Libris Alma integrated library system
    Familiarity with current issues and principles regarding RDA and BIBFRAME
    Experience working on digital repository records and projects
    Metadata creation experience using Dublin Core and/or FAST
    Knowledge of semantic web and linked data principles
    Demonstrated ability to organize workflow within assigned areas
    Experience training staff and preparing effective training materials and other documentation
    Demonstrated analytical and problem-solving skills
    Experience working with diverse cultures and learning styles


    About the Job


    Position Overview:


    The Cataloging Librarian is responsible for original cataloging of all library materials, including government documents, as well as complex copy-cataloging. The librarian will ensure that titles are represented accurately in Alma, the University of Minnesota's system-wide unified resource management system, in order to facilitate identification of and access to materials through MNCAT Discovery and OCLC by UM students, faculty, and staff.


    The Librarian will develop, document, and train staff in local cataloging procedures and workflow; serve as the local resource person regarding cataloging and metadata; and participate in University of Minnesota Alma operations and auxiliary groups to establish and refine enterprise-wide cataloging/metadata policies and procedures


    This position is assigned to the Technical Services Unit of the Access & Collection Services Team. Responsibilities of the Access & Collection Services Team include public services such as circulation, reserves, resource sharing, and security. Collection services responsibilities are acquisitions, cataloging and processing, stack maintenance, and weeding.


    The assistant librarian performs professional duties, initially under guidance, which require knowledge and education in library development and management, systems for providing access to resources, organization and acquisition of collections and specialized information systems. The assistant librarian is normally expected to contribute to the advancement of librarianship through visible participation in professional activities, particularly those directly related to the library or unit in which s/he holds the appointment, such as publication, work in professional organizations, and/or other appropriate activities.


    Essential Job Functions:


    Original cataloging & complex copy-cataloging (60%)


    -Performs all levels of cataloging for library materials in all formats, including monographs, serials, music scores, electronic resources, and media.
    -Follow national cataloging standards (e.g., AACR2, LCC, LCSH, MARC, RDA) and adhere to established University of Minnesota system-wide Alma cataloging procedures and policies to ensure data integrity, uniformity, and reliable, consistent discovery.
    -Perform database maintenance functions including updating bibliographic, holdings, and item records.
    -Verify headings using functionality in Alma or the OCLC authority file.
    -Serve as a resource person within the library for cataloging rules and standards, and Alma utilization (including Analytics).
    -Develop, document, and train staff in local cataloging procedures and workflow.


    -Participate in appropriate UM Alma operations and auxiliary groups to establish and refine enterprise-wide cataloging/metadata policies and procedures.
    -Work collaboratively with UM peers to maintain the shared catalog and participate in special cleanup and enhancement projects for bibliographic and item data.
    -Review and revise metadata for digital objects in the UMD's institutional repository.


    Government Documents (30%)


    -Manage or perform the receiving, processing, and cataloging of government publications received through the Federal Depository Library Program (FDLP) in accordance with depository guidelines using the SuDoc classification system.
    -Work with the Government Documents Librarian to interpret and comply with federal policies and regulations pursuant to depository libraries. These policies dictate cataloging standards, acquisitions rules, withdrawal, and discard procedures.


    Library-Related Professional Service and Engagement (10%)


    Attend library, UMD, and community meetings and events.
    Serve on library, campus, or university teams or committees.
    Engage in professional development.
    Contribute to the profession through organizational work, presenting papers, or publishing.
