  • 1.  Unapproved Minutes from the September 2022 RMRT Board Meeting Submitted by Mimi Morris

    Posted Jan 04, 2023 07:11 AM
Members present: Chair Rocco Staino; Past Chair Nancy Bolt; Secretary Mimi Morris; Round Table Councilor Aaron Dobson; Staff Liaison Danielle M Ponton; Directors Naomi Angier, Pat Hogan, Kay Cassell; Members Ann Marie Pipkin, Nann Blaine Hilyard. ("Shelly" is Michele Lauer-Bader? Is she Treasurer?)

Agenda was reviewed and approved and minutes were approved with Shelly making the motion, seconded by Nancy. For the Treasurer's Report, 2022 assets are $33,860. Expenses for Annual Conference have not appeared yet. We are in a good position, and want to stay that way. Suggested decreases in Round Table dues would be detrimental.

ALA Update:  Aaron reported that Constitution and Bylaws are to be combined into one document. A first draft will be released to Council and other leaders for their responses, then Draft 2 will be released to full membership for feedback.  The ALA Nominating Committee is seeking Council nominees. As a result of last January's meeting, Council will decrease in size. Executive Council will expand as more subunits need representation.

The Operating Agreement Working Group will be suggestions on divisions and committees, including what can be decided through policy rather than bylaws.

Report from Annual Conference:  Nancy reported that our meeting had good attendance. We had about 50 people attend; the speaker was Debbie Applegate, author of Madam: the Biography of Polly Adler. The visit to the Word Museum was fantastic, as was lunch there. We had 12-13 people at dinner. Thanks to Naomi for setting this up! We had 11 people express interest in joining RMRT. We are one of the few growing round tables.

Nominations: Nancy reported that we need a Chair-elect. Directors: Kay is leaving the Board, so we need a new member. Lisa Kippur expressed interest.

We discussed the need for an Assistant Treasurer. Do we still need this? Keep it for succession purposes? Rocco suggested the position might help the incomingTreasurer, and perhaps provide support for the Secretary. Nancy said the position might include acting as Membership Chair. Consensus seemed to be keep as is for now. Kay is willing to be nominated for the position.

Round Table Dues Revision: Naomi said that it was proposed to drop our dues by $5. It would substantially decrease our funding. We strongly felt that dues should stay the same as other Round Tables.

Membership: Rocco is interested in travel grants-that can be a hook to get people to join. The recipient would be required to be a round table member. Rocco also suggested a gift membership for new retirees. We have 346 members now, with a goal of 375.

We discussed the January meeting, now called LLX. What can we do? We have no official role, and most of us are not going. There will be no meeting at LLX, but we will have a Zoom meeting in January. The fifth Sunday in January will be our online book club.

Rocco is considering organizing a spring two day tour to New York, staying at the 3 West Club near Rockefeller Center. We could offer this as a membership incentive.

Old Business: Nancy is interested in our offering a webinar on some aspect of retirement, perhaps using a book called Independence Day by Steve Lopez, and the emotional/psychological aspects of retirement. Everyone was enthusiastic about this idea.

Nann announced that the Book Club would meet on October 30, with a Newbery Book prompt: one that you loved and one you've never read.

New Business: Nann brought up planning for Annual Conference in Chicago. She suggested a field trip to the American Writers Museum, Pritzker Military Museum & Library, or the Newbery Library. We need to decide on dinner and a possible speaker.

Rocco suggested, with unanimous agreement, a memorial resolution in honor of Jim Rettig, and a letter of condolence to the family.

    Respectfully submitted,

    Mimi Morris

    RMRT Secretary
