The Retired Members Round Table (RMRT) shall exist to develop programs of particular interest to retired persons from all types of libraries and all forms of library services, including formal opportunities for continued involvement and learning; a variety of leadership training and opportunities for mentoring; lifelong professional involvement and networking; and active engagement in the American Library Association and the profession of librarianship.

    Ruth Gordon Gadfly Award – Applications Now Open

    The Ruth Gordon Gadfly Award is presented annually to a current American Library Association (ALA) member who is retired from full-time employment. This award honors the legacy of Ruth Gordon-a librarian, educator, and passionate advocate for civil liberties who passed away in 2016.

    The award provides $1,000 to support travel expenses (registration, transportation, housing, meals) for the recipient to attend the ALA Annual Conference.

    Eligibility Requirements

    Applicants must:

    • Be a current ALA member
    • Be retired from full-time paid employment
    • Demonstrate a record of active ALA involvement both before and during retirement
      (Applicants should describe their professional activity and participation in ALA and its divisions, affiliates, or chapters.)
    • Not have previously received the Ruth Gordon Gadfly Travel Allowance Award or the Norman Horrocks–Rowman & Littlefield Press Annual Conference Travel Award
    • Not apply for both the Norman Horrocks–Rowman & Littlefield Press Award and the Ruth Gordon Gadfly Award for the same ALA Annual Conference

    Application Requirements

    Eligible applicants must submit a statement of no more than 500 words that includes:

    • How attending the ALA Annual Conference will benefit the applicant
    • How the applicant will contribute to the conference
    • A description of the applicant's contributions to ALA and/or its affiliates and chapters before and during retirement

    Award Details

    • The recipient will be recognized at the Retired Members Round Table (RMRT) Annual Meeting during the ALA Annual Conference.
    • Award funds will be provided as follows:
      • $500 advance prior to the conference
      • Up to $500 reimbursement after the conference upon submission of receipts
    • If the recipient does not attend the conference, the $500 advance must be returned.
