  • 1.  Questions about Library Career for those Retired

    Hi RMRT,

My name is Bryan and I am in process of finishing formal studies. I am looking deeply into library field and trying to ask quality questions in the meantime. I joined this RT for mentorship. My interests within library field are research, STEM, software, reference services. I am also looking into research university, military, and medical libraries. I compiled some questions for this RT (it is alright with me if you are comfortable with responding to 1 or 2 questions and if some questions are not applicable to you, just respond to questions most applicable to your career as a librarian) :

    • Have any of you worked in a research university (in reference and/or STEM), military, or medical library? If so, may you describe your journey into those type of libraries? Do you have book, guides, or informational sources for those specific types of libraries? If so, may you link them?
    • What inspired you get into library field and what caused you to sustain interest in librarianship?
    • What are some early library career lessons you learned and how did those lessons contribute/not contribute to the trajectory of your library career?
    • If you worked in another field prior to working in library, what skills transferred to library field from other field(s)?
    • As a retired librarian, what do you miss most and cherish about working as a librarian?
    • What aspects of librarianship did you find most challenging?
    • What recommendations do you have for a person aspiring to become a librarian?
    • During your time as a library, what changes did you observe within librarianship?
    • In what areas do you hope library field improves/Where do you see room for improvement in library field?

If you find this too much to type, I am willing to schedule a zoom meeting as an alternative to typing.
