Dear Colleagues,
In our ALA "Retired Members Make Great Advocates" graphic (https://www.ala.org/retired-librarians-make-great-advocates), RMRT Advocacy Committee members suggest writing letters to the editor and op-eds as actions that retired members can take, actions that may be more difficult for those currently working in the field.
As an example of that action, I am sharing my Arizona Daily Star (Tucson) 8/17/26 op-ed: "Banning historical facts and experiences in the name of DEI."
https://tucson.com/opinion/column/article_bc904301-42ed-4de8-a858-ab55457bba38.html
It is critical to keep reminding our colleagues, administrators, families, neighbors, and community members that the First Amendment is being undermined in the U.S. Simply put, it is anti-American to ban books in schools and libraries.
Please join me in writing op-eds and letters to the editor in your local media outlets exposing censorship in your community. This is no time to be neutral regarding the right to read and self-expression.
Thank you.
Sincerely,
Judi Moreillon
