It's been a little over four years since I've retired from the University of Colorado at Boulder, and I wanted to alert all of you retirees and future retirees of a great opportunity to remain involved in Libraries. Of course, some of us have moved to other careers, or maybe we have changed direction in our retirement, but as a young retiree, I've found involvement in the American Library Association something super enjoyable, especially in retirement. I've even received a monetary award to attend the ALA Annual Conference this past summer from the Retired Member Round Table, which is what I want to let all of you know about, if you didn't know already.
I'm not really a librarian, as I was the executive assistant to the Dean of Libraries at the University. One of my first adventures in Library Land was to win an award for my work with the Friends of the Libraries from United for Libraries. I've remained involved with ALA since that time (2017!), and you can remain involved too!
You may have already heard this news, but if you didn't, beginning September 1, 2024, ALA's personal membership structure will change, and nearly all members will see a decrease in dues. Retired members are classified as "Individual Type II". Retired members paid $58 prior to September 1st, 2024, now that membership will be $55, saving our retirees $3/year. A great way to use that $3 is to put it toward a Retired Member Round Table membership which is $15/year.
