Banned Books From the Big Chair

Sage, Banned Books Week, ALA's Office for Intellectual Freedom, and Unite Against Book Bans are teaming up to make the 2023 Banned Books Readout booth even bigger – with a very big chair! We're writing to ask for your help!

Attendees and authors are invited to the Sage booth in the Grand Concourse (near the ALA Connect Lounge and the main Exhibits entrance), to record videos of themselves reading from their favorite banned book, make a call to action, and pledge their support to "Let Freedom Read."

We need volunteer support to help with the following. You will be provided with talking points and guidance in advance.

    ·        Greeting authors and attendees at the booth and/or trying to get people to participate

    ·        Obtaining signed video release forms from those wanting to be recorded (we will have forms ready)

    ·        Keeping track of "fast pass" people who request a specific time for when they can record

    ·        Getting proper spelling of participants' names on whiteboard, which will be replaced with "lower-third" on video

    ·        Assisting readers with locating the book they want to read from and keeping bookshelf clean / organized

    ·        Assisting with social media photos for attendees in Big Chair and handling various pieces of signage that participants can use in their photos

    ·        Handing out participation ribbons and postcards reminding readers to see their recording on the Sage YouTube during Banned Books Week (October 1-7, 2023)

    ·        Assisting with breaks in the booth so everyone gets time away to rest / eat lunch / etc.

This is a great opportunity to meet authors and network with other members of the ALA community!
