  • 1.  Soliciting YOUR Questions: Preparing to Attend a Professional Conference

    Posted Jan 15, 2025 05:39 PM

    Hi ACRL colleagues!

Are you new to librarianship, or to attending professional conferences? What do you wish you knew about presenting at, attending, or navigating a professional conference?

Being new to the field, it can be overwhelming to even find a conference to attend, let alone figure out the logistics of funding, submitting proposals, traveling, and socializing with so many new people. What do you want to know? What concerns do you have?

My colleague and I are planning a podcast episode on conferences and are soliciting your questions! Your questions will help guide the conversation, and help us as we identify guests who can share their experiences and knowledge to help illuminate the realities of attending conferences.

Please feel free to direct message me here, respond in this discussion post, or you can email me at ssparrow@umn.edu. If you would prefer to submit your questions anonymously, we have a Google form as well.

    Thank you for considering,

I am on the tail end of "new" as I am in my fifth year in a public library, and halfway through my MLIS program.  I attended RIPL and PLA with my director, so I had someone to show me the ropes a bit.  LLX will be my first conference to attend on my own, and I wish I knew better how to connect with people that work at similarly-sized/positioned libraries and how to develop the collaborations that I see on panel presentations.  I am in a town of less than 30,000 people, so I find myself working through how to scale down a lot of what is shared.  I am also still working on the best way to manage the knowledge when I return home.  How are people offloading all that you take in while at the conference so it is accessible when you finally need it?  Thanks for doing this!  I look forward to hearing the podcast!

I love this topic and cannot wait to hear what others want to know! I submitted some questions on your Google Form, but now I have some more I would have liked to ask before my first ALA conference.

How do you handle networking when you don't know anyone at the conference?

What's your go-to strategy for dealing with a session that ends up being a poor fit or unhelpful?

What's your favorite way to document or process what you've learned during or after the event?

What's one thing you wish someone had told you before attending your first conference?

    Thanks,

    MN
