    Job Description:

    The University at Albany Libraries (State University of New York, Albany, NY) seek a librarian or MLS/MSIS student (see minimum qualifications) to assist with scholarly communication services, collection management, and reference services on a temporary basis. Working collaboratively with stakeholders and colleagues, this librarian will provide services appropriate to the curriculum and research needs of students and faculty at the Dewey Graduate Library on the downtown University at Albany campus, as well as provide support for activities and projects of the University Libraries' Scholarly Communication Team.

    This is a temporary position to begin as soon as possible to assist with covering planned absences now through February 20, 2023. It is not subject to renewal. The position will be staffed at 20 hours per week in-person/on-site at the Dewey Graduate Library. The work schedule will be developed with the successful candidate and will include some evening and/or weekend hours. This position reports to the Coordinator of Scholarly Communication.

    RESPONSIBILITIES:

    Reference and Collection Management Duties

    • Provide general reference services, in person and using a variety of platforms (e.g., online chat), during assigned hours
    • Assist with collection development related to political science, public policy, public administration, and law
    • Assist with weeding the Dewey Graduate Library print reference collection

    Scholarly Communication Team Duties

    • Attend Scholarly Communication team meetings
    • Research and create resource guides, FAQS, and other support materials related to scholarly communication services at the Libraries
    • Serve as primary point person for researching and answering tickets/emails that relate to scholarly communication services at the Libraries
    • Assist with event-planning activities for Open Access Week

    Other duties and projects may be assigned depending on capacity and need


    Requirements:

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: 

    • The successful candidate possesses an MLS/MSIS or comparable degree from a program accredited by the American Library Association (or foreign equivalent) or is a currently enrolled student of such a program, with expected completion of MLS/MSIS degree by May 2023.
    • Demonstrated interest or experience in providing reference services.
    • Demonstrated interest or experience in collection management strategies.
    • Some knowledge of scholarly communication services and the open access movement.
    • Proficiency with Microsoft 365 tools.
    • Excellent communication and organizational skills. 
    • Ability to work both independently and in a team environment. 
    • Ability to work with a culturally diverse population.

     

    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

    • Previous work in an academic library setting.
    • Interest or experience in activities and services related to open scholarship, institutional repositories, and data management is desired, but not essential.
