ALA Intellectual Freedom Committee Update for NMRT Members - October Update

    Dear NMRT members,

    Yesterday, October 30, was the most recent meeting of the Intellectual Freedom Committee.  Here are a couple of updates from that meeting:

    ·        Speaking engagements related to banned books have increased significantly.

    o   In 2022 there were 73

    o   In 2023 , 111 have been completed + 30 more are on the calendar

    o   Consider becoming a speaker for the Intellectual Speakers Bureau.  They are looking to grow their database of speakers. Fill out the interest form at this link for more information.

    o   The committee suggested members consider privacy programs at all meetings. 

    ·       Report censorship using this link which takes you to the ALA website and a form from the Office of Intellectual Freedom (OIR).

    o   The OIR reported an overall positive response to Banned Books Week and stated that some programs are still available on Facebook.
