We hear about “sustainability” but what does it mean? Sustainability is about maintaining the environment we have and work on not depleting resources. We may have our own ideas about how to be more sustainable in our personal lives, but what about in our libraries? Below are some ideas that can help with sustainability in your library - what are your ideas?
- Small steps matter!
- Set up recycling bins in your library.
- Giving out “swag”? Consider reusable items, such as glass or metal water bottles, seeds, or plants.
- About that meeting…Can it be hosting virtually?
· Feel like making a bigger impact? Consider a “library of things”! Libraries have started collecting items such as puzzles, cake pans, and, in some cases, looms and butter churning items, to lend to patrons! For a fun (and educational!) time, check out https://www.richlandlibrary.com/libraryofthings.
And remember to give yourself credit! By circulating materials and encouraging the growth of digital collections, you’re already helping the sustainability movement!
