The mission of the Library Instruction Round Table (LIRT) is to provide a forum for discussion of activities, programs, and problems of instruction in the use of libraries; to contribute to the education and training of librarians for library instruction; to promote instruction in the use of libraries as an essential library service, and to serve as a channel of communication on library instruction between the ALA divisions, ALA and ACRL committees, state clearinghouses, Project LOEX, other organizations concerned with instruction in the use of libraries, and members of the Association.

    The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) Libraries seek innovative and creative professionals to fill two Liaison Librarian positions in the Lister Hill Library of the Health Sciences:

    •  Liaison to the UAB Schools of Dentistry and Optometry
    • Liaison to the UAB School of Public Health

    These liaisons are key members of Lister Hill Library's Clinical, Academic, & Research Engagement (CARE) Department, reporting to the department head. They provide a broad range of research and scholarly support and instructional services to faculty, staff, and students in their assigned liaison areas.  These are 12-month non-tenure track faculty positions at the initial rank of Instructor or Assistant Professor.

     The Lister Hill Library of the Health Sciences is the premier health sciences library in the state of Alabama and supports the UAB Schools of Dentistry, Health Professions, Medicine, Nursing, Optometry, and Public Health as well as programs in the Joint Health Sciences. With over 22,000 students and 2,200 full-time faculty members, UAB ranks in the top 20 public universities for federal research funding and is the major teaching-research university in the state. UAB ranks in the top ten nationally for student diversity, and Birmingham is the largest city in Alabama, offering a vibrant cultural community with a wide array of recreational opportunities.

     Responsibilities for these positions include:

    • Serving as liaison to selected health sciences schools
    • Offering instructional services, including teaching classes and designing face-to-face and online instructional materials, to support research and evidence-based practice
    • Providing general reference services, including answering online reference questions (chat and e-mail)
    • Providing specialized reference services including in-depth consultations, mediated database searching, identifying appropriate knowledge-based resources, and developing search strategies
    • Contributing to the library's support of expert-level reviews, including literature reviews, by leading effective project consultations and participating in research projects, as appropriate
    • Developing and maintaining specialized knowledge of the library's databases, search interfaces, and other resources in order to effectively match resources with information needs
    • Staying current with health sciences education trends, curricular structures, pedagogical methods, and innovative instructional delivery
    • Serving on appropriate internal and external committees and participating in relevant regional and national library and health sciences professional organizations and associations
    • Monitoring trends in health sciences librarianship and participating in relevant continuing education opportunities in both librarianship and health sciences disciplines or practices
    • Engaging in research and scholarship as required of UAB Libraries faculty

     Required Qualifications               

    • American Library Association (ALA) accredited master's degree
    • Demonstrated experience searching biomedical literature such as PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, Embase, or Google Scholar
    • Experience providing reference services
    • Experience designing and conducting presentations to groups about library resources
    • Strong user-focused public services orientation
    • Flexibility to work collaboratively in a team environment
    • Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communications skills

     Preferred Qualifications              

    • At least one year of professional library experience working in an academic health sciences or biomedical library or affiliated clinical/research environment.
    • An additional advanced degree or formal coursework in a STEM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics) or health sciences field of study
    • Demonstrated knowledge of citation management software, such as EndNote
    • Experience executing systematic reviews, meta-analysis, or related advanced projects
    • Demonstrated ability to build relationships with various constituencies and user groups
