The mission of the Library Instruction Round Table (LIRT) is to provide a forum for discussion of activities, programs, and problems of instruction in the use of libraries; to contribute to the education and training of librarians for library instruction; to promote instruction in the use of libraries as an essential library service, and to serve as a channel of communication on library instruction between the ALA divisions, ALA and ACRL committees, state clearinghouses, Project LOEX, other organizations concerned with instruction in the use of libraries, and members of the Association.

    Hello everyone.

I am going through the exploration process for determining whether or not LinkedIn Learning is right for my public library system. I am relatively new to the field, and I have done quite a bit of reading on the subject, but there is nothing like talking to other colleagues and experts in the field. Are there any specific pros/cons or bits of information you know/wish you had known when reviewing the service? Thank you in advance for your help.

    With appreciation.

We implemented it  at my university. It's a solid resource. As I recall, there was some pushback initially against some user information concerns early on; but I  don't recall what happened as a result of those. My university wanted the resource regardless, so we implemented it. We have had some issues with setting up single sign-on and they do not allow you to embed videos into web pages except in a very limited fashion, which has been problematic for us - but I imagine may not be an issue for a public library (depending on how you want to use it).

    Daniel,

Thank you so much for sharing your experience. I heard about some privacy concerns, but ALA released a statement about 3 months back that supported the changes to some of their terms of service. I can see how the single sign-on and embedding videos might become problematic. Thank you for bringing those to my attention.

Hi Heather. The Washington State Library funds a statewide subscription to LinkedIn Learning, underwritten by discounts from Microsoft, and made possible through Washington State Legislative appropriation. It's an extremely popular and well regarded resource among the state's public libraries. Last year LinkedIn Learning briefly considered requiring  users to establish connected LinkedIn accounts, a proposal that raised intense concern among libraries about patron privacy. (The requirement also would have technically made it impossible for users under 16 to use LinkedIn Learning/Lynda, which was a problem -- as a chunk of users are young high school or even middle-school students.)  LinkedIn Learning abandoned that proposal, though, and patrons can access the service through their local public library website.  If you have more questions, I'd be happy to put you in touch with my colleague, who spearheads this program.
