  • 1.  LinkedIn Learning (Formerly Lynda.com)

    Hello everyone.

I am going through the exploration process for determining whether or not LinkedIn Learning is right for my public library system. I am relatively new to the field, and I have done quite a bit of reading on the subject, but there is nothing like talking to other colleagues and experts in the field. Are there any specific pros/cons or bits of information you know/wish you had known when reviewing the service? Thank you in advance for your help.

    With appreciation.

The library system that I work at had a 2 year contract with Lynda.com before it was purchased by Microsoft and became LinkedIn Learning. We will not be renewing our contract.
Why? LinkedIn, which owns the Lynda product, has significantly changed their licensing terms, and will require any patron who wants to use Lynda.com to have a verified LinkedIn account.  We value the privacy and confidentiality of our patrons' use of library resources, and LinkedIn is crossing a line by requiring patrons to provide personally identifiable information in order to use a library resource. Unless this information has changed recently, but I don't believe it has.

Instead, we've gone with Gale's new product: Gale Presents Udemy which provides online video courses in the same way that Lynda.com/LinkedIn Learning does.  We also offer Gale Courses powered by Ed2Go.

    I hope that helps!

The terms were changed to address the issues that libraries brought forward.

Thank you for sending this. I have seen that LinkedIn Learning changed some terms and conditions related to privacy after backlash from professional organizations, like ALA. Shonna provided links below.

I am not familiar with Gale Presents Udemy and how it compares, but I'll add that to my list - thank you kindly.

The MT State Library sponsors a leadership institute every other year.  The most recent cohort decided that they wanted to take a time management course together through LinkenIn Learning.  I attempted to license the course for them, or to license access to LinkedIn for the institute participants for a short period of time (2-3 months) and found that there was no licensing option that would meet our needs.  Instead, we ended up asking everyone to license the content on their own and we would reimburse them for a month or two of the fees.  Good feedback on the course, though.

I know that the Bozeman Public Library licenses access for their patrons and that they are happy with the service, overall.

It would be great if we could actively build up OER  (Open Educational Resources) to meet the needs of patrons and librarians.  COSLA i s sponsoring a Moodle platform (National Library Training Center - http://librarytrainingcenter.com/iomad/login/index.php )as a repository for content created by State Library Staff.  The more we share the content that we create, the better our world will be...
