  • 1.  Groups within LibGuides

    Hi folks -

Would it be possible to create a few groups in LibGuides to help organize GODORT guides?
And then assign guides to the groups (if you want a guide in more than one group, making a redirect guide is one solution).
Also - I think Tech Committee is thinking about Subjects while developing Best Practices.
Some groups I suggest might be Subjects instead.
I will list existing groups and subjects at the end.

Groups allows for volunteers in one group to have a different account type specific to that group (example State Agency Database), and limited permissions for other groups.
Many other reasons I can list if people want me to.

    My suggestions:
    • Conferences & Meetings
      • Either keep together or split up meetings/Friday chats and conferences - maybe make a subject?
      • Conferences
        • especially helpful when there isn't a standard format for naming guides
        • Examples GODORT 2021 Midwinter Virtual ; 2021 ALA Annual Virtual Conference, etc.
    • Projects
      • State Agency Database (already a group although
      • Voting & Election tool kit - depends on what Ed Comm wants to do.
    • Committees
      • GIC - already a group
      • Cataloging - already a group
      • Tech Committee
      • Education Committee
        • Voting & Elections Tool Kit - either a separate group (manage volunteer accounts) or make a subject.
      • Other committees too
    Thanks!

    Jenny

    Hi Jenny,
Thanks for bringing this topic up!

At UW, we lean heavily towards utilizing "Subjects" over "Groups" in our organizational schema, but that may or may not be the best approach for GODORT. I think some advantages to organizing guides by "Subject" include:
    • guides could live in two or more places without setting up redirect guides, which can be cumbersome and confusing
    • guides would be sorted in one way -- by subject -- instead of in two -- by subject and group
    • it actually makes assigning editing privileges a little easier as admins won't have to assign editing privileges for new LibGuide users to as many groups
Does the Technology committee have any thoughts on this? No matter which approach we decide to go with, it will be helpful to have improved organization of our LibGuides! And I think Conferences & Meetings, Committees, and Projects would be 3 helpful categories to add.

    Best,
    Kian
