    Colleagues,

As you are all aware there are several issues involving GPO that will have great impact in the FDLP, FDsys, etc.  Yesterday the ALA/COL held a conference call regarding the proposed budget reductions, the suggestion that the SuDoc transfer to LC, that GPO rent space in order to support FDsys, and the removal of the Ithaka report.

These issues have been tasked to the Subcommittee on Government Information (GIS) which is in the process of gathering comments that will be presented to COL by 8/22.  I have been asked to solicit comments from GODORT members on the following questions:

    • What should be the overall message to the U.S. Congress regarding the current proposals?
    • Who should the ALA try and reach with their message?
    • What partners should the ALA seek in advocating for maintaining the funding and capabilities of the GPO?
    • What, if anything, should the ALA seek from the GPO regarding reforms and new approaches to their mission in these tight economic times?

Please send your comments by COB 8/12 so I can review and submit to GIS Chair Richard Huffine by 8/15.  I would appreciate it if you direct them to my work email:  barkley@unm.edu

I also urge you to contact your Congressional delegation on these matters and urge they support the full funding of GPO including FDsys and that GPO repost the Ithaka report.

    Thanks

    Dan Barkley
