    Dear Friends,

I would like to request 7 minutes to discuss re-establishing a GODORT reorg committee/initiative, to finalize the work begun under Stephen Woods.

Back then, we began adjusting individual committees, but did not address GODORT operations as a whole, thus maintaining our organizational structure optimized for 1973 librarianship. I believe that changes in ALA, GODORT membership, government documents/info librarianship, gov doc curricula, succession planning, modes of communication and the state of our government, demand we evaluate how to achieve our mission, especially in developing and expanding  our community.

I propose that this committee's first change would facilitate strategizing and clarifying GODORT's goals, and then recommend attendant bylaws-friendly structural improvements. It would be less concerned with what GODORT does than how we do it. After 6+ years an active member/chair of Membership committee, Education Committee and liaison to other ALA groups, I know firsthand how exceptional GODORT and its members are, and would love to help eliminate some operational roadblocks preventing us from realizing our potential.

Like most of us, I am very busy. But these are critical times, and as the single organization addressing local, state, federal and international gov information exclusively, we have unparalleled responsibility and opportunity.

    Thanks for consideration,
    Rachel Dobkin
