The mission of the Government Documents Round Table (GODORT) is to (1) To provide a forum for discussion of problems, concerns, and for exchange of ideas by librarians working with government documents; (2) to provide a force for initiating and supporting programs to increase availability, use, and bibliographic control of documents; (3) to increase communication between documents librarians and other librarians; (4) to contribute to the extension and improvement of education and training of documents librarians.

    Help! I'm an Accidental Government Information Librarian presents... A matter of life and death: The evolution of vital records & statistics in the U.S. 

    Records of life events, such as births and deaths, were first documented by the church, or private individuals, if at all. It wasn't until the public health movement in the mid-1800's when the U.S. government took note of their importance and haphazardly began registering deaths. Interest in quantifying these records as valuable statistics also began during this time, but they were far from perfect. The act of recording births and deaths finally gained traction in the 20th century when all state and local governments adhered to a more consistent system. This webinar will explore the history of vital records and statistics in the U.S., including its challenges, outcomes, and relevance today. 

    Molly Goldston is a Reference Services Assistant at the State Library of North Carolina's Government and Heritage Library (GHL). In this role, she assists patrons in accessing resources related to North Carolina government, history, culture, and genealogy. Prior to joining GHL she worked for libraries in the Department of Defense and the Environmental Protection Agency, as well as two public libraries. She earned her Master's in Library and Information Science from North Carolina Central University, and a Bachelor's degree in Political Science and German Studies from North Carolina State University.

    Elizabeth Hayden is the Reference Services and Data Librarian at the Government and Heritage Library, part of the State Library of North Carolina. She began working at the State Library in 2008. She is passionate about helping people understand documents connecting them to their past. Before coming to the State Library, she worked in public, community college, academic, and special libraries.
