Legislation Committee Winter 2021 Update

    Hello GODORT members and friends,

As Congress goes into winter recess, we wanted to remind you that this is a great time to reach out to your Member of Congress to personally thank them for supporting legislation that makes a positive impact on your community (and/or, your library), or to ask for their support on future legislation. Depending on where you live, the winter recess may also offer opportunities to attend town halls or public meetings (virtual or in-person) or find other ways to connect with elected officials.

You can email or call your Member of Congress or their local district office using the "Find Your Member" tool: https://www.congress.gov/members/find-your-member. The ALA Public Policy and Advocacy Office has a guide to Getting Started with Advocacy (https://www.ala.org/advocacy/getting-started) with helpful tips to make this process easy! ALA encourages members to sign up for advocacy alerts (https://cqrcengage.com/ala/app/register?2&m=435347) to receive emails about future opportunities to take action. ALA also encourages members to consider opportunities to build relationships with their Members of Congress, such as by arranging a tour of their library (https://www.ala.org/advocacy/tour).

If you are curious about how current legislation may affect libraries, here are two notable pieces of legislation that have recently passed or are pending, with particular relevance to government information. Both pieces of legislation include important steps to greater public access to government information:

Last but not least -- if you are an experienced advocate for access to government information, and willing to share your expertise with the government information community, please reach out! We'd like to find ways to help our community grow.

    Best wishes,

    Shari Laster
