  • 1.  Best practices for board game cataloging?

    Posted Mar 25, 2022 09:03 AM
    Hi folks -

    Please forgive another simple question:

Somehow I had it in my head that GameRT had at one point developed a sort of best practices guide for cataloging board games? I can't find anything on the website or my email now.

It is entirely possible I imagined this - I'm in a lot of different RTs and divisions and I get a lot of email and I could have easily conflated some things in my mind.

BUT we're finally starting to catalog our collection of board games, and I'm wondering if anyone has any basic guidelines or considerations to keep in mind? Is there a good resource out there about both cataloging and processing them for circulation? So far it looks like every library does it a little differently - and that may be the answer, but I thought I'd ask around in case there's something out there that I've missed.

    Thank you!
    -Shanna

This might be what you're looking for: https://journals.ala.org/index.php/lrts/article/view/6642

One of GameRT's past Presidents, Diane Robson, worked on that research.

Don't Just Roll the Dice: Simple Solutions for Circulating Tabletop Game Collections Effectively in Your Library

Diane Robson, Jessica Phillips, Steven Guerrero

    Abstract

Tabletop game collections in libraries raise questions regarding standards in collection maintenance. This paper details the University of North Texas Media Library's study to determine best practices and standards for preserving and processing tabletop games for circulation. The authors list and describe the different methods of processing and preserving the games Ticket to Ride and Betrayal at House on the Hill and the project plan to test different copies of each game in circulation. After a period of circulation for each copy, the authors assess each method through an evaluation of damage and loss in relation to time and money spent on preservation and processing. The paper also describes a study of damage intended to simulate the effects of possible hazardous materials and scenarios during a typical play session, along with an assessment of damage to the test pieces. The authors outline the preservation and processing methods they currently use based on their findings from this research.

Oh, also, if you're going to ALA Annual, the GameRT President's Program will include a hands-on activity where folks can talk about processing and cataloging board games!
