    Hello Everybody,

I'm creating a new games collection at my library. We have no games so far. Our library is an academic library specializing in economics, finance, marketing and journalism. I wanted to ask if anyone had ideas of games (board games or video games) we could purchase and add to this new collection.

Thank you so much for your insight!

    Hi Aronne,

I suggest checking out the boardgamegeek.com site. They list hundreds of games by category. The economics category has games like: "The $tock Exchange Game," "Acquisitions," "After the Empire," and "Alubari: A Nice Cup of Tea."

Other categories you may want to check out are: Industry/Manufacturing, Educational, Negotiation, or Movies/TV/Radio theme.

There are reviews on many of the games, by people who have bought and played them.

These are all boardgames. Hope this helps.

    Hello Aronne,

Since your library specializes in economics and marketing I'd suggest one of the old standbys, Settlers of Catan- a game about resource scarcity, management, and trading.  Hey, someone had to say it.  I've also heard good things about Cashflow, a personal finance game.

You mentioned video games- what platforms are you willing to support?

    Hi

i think you will want to find resources that strike the right balance of academic level business and economics with engaging gameplay for the students.

Catan may be too abstracted and not rigorous enough for your needs. Ideally you want to find resources that meet specific curricular goals and not simply hit the broader concept of money and trading.

I am en route to Annual right now but a few initial suggestions are:

    1. Power Grid - a good exploration into open markets and how supply and demand affect resource costs.
    2. Chicago Express - an introductory exploration to stocks and dividends
    3. 1846 (or other 18xx games) - a much deeper dive into companies, stocks, dividends, commodity speculation and more.
    4. Stockpile - another stockholding game
    5. NY Slice - a pure I cut, you choose game that highlights valuation, equity and resource sharing.
    6. Tulip Bubble - investment bubbles.

I would be happy to talk more and share more tailored resource recommendations if you would like. Feel free to message me through connect.

Ticket to Ride seems like it would be a good fit for your library and it is very fun to play.
    Best,

I would add to Kate's comment that specifically Ticket to Ride Pennsylvania as that version contains stocks.

Some of the auction style games which includes Power Grid.  Another game that may be of interest is Fast Food Franchise.
