  • 1.  Best bands for board games?

    Hello!
I'm looking to convert our existing (but small) in house board game collection into a circulating collection. Any preferences in types of bands to keep together your board games that circ? I've seen the rubber bands ones and the nylon band ones and I don't know what holds up better in collections. Thank you!

    Hi Amy,

Hi Amy, we use these hanging bags for our board game collection.  They work a bit better than bands because they prevent the box from damage as well.

We use those bags to hang our in-house puzzles (during normal times) and those bags are the bane of my existence, haha. They tear at the handle so easily! This is coming from a children's librarian, though, and the puzzles see dozens of uses per day in normal times.

Do you have photos using these bag with board games, Dan? Do you hang the games or just use the bags to keep the games contained on the shelf?

Most collections I've seen use rubber h-bands.

Just a quick question for those who are doing board games in a bag. What type of games do you have? Also, what procedures are you taking for the board games and all the included pieces/items to minimize spread during the pandemic?

We have about 120 board games in our collection, so it's all kinds, from checkers to current stuff.  All of our materials are quarantined for 5 days when they are returned, whether its a book or a DVD or a game.

We haven't had a problem with bags ripping, but we did have to spread the collection out across another shelf.  The weight of all the games hanging was starting to bend the metal rod that they were hung on.  I do like the bags over the bands because it protects the boxes from getting wet if they're in our oversized dropbox outside, or just when people are browsing and drop it or something.

We have neoprene cases (like the kind you get for holding tablets or laptops) and we put the game contents in there with a contents list. The original boxes are shelved for patrons to browse, but the games are kept behind our circulation desk. Our collection is only a few months old, and we have had no issues so far with games being returned in the drop box. This helps us ensure that, no matter the size or shape of the game, it will fit in the drop box since we still aren't taking in-person returns. The only downside is, neoprene cases can add up and are an extra expense to account for. We got some grant money from a local charitable  organization to help with the expense.

Where do y'all usually buy your hanging bags?  I'd like to start a board game collection at my library so I was trying to find the best deal for small bulk (50 or less preferably)
