  • 1.  Conference Collaboration about Games?

    Hi Everyone,

Anyone interested in collaborating on a presentation about curating game collections in the library for The Collective? Its a conference in Knoxville, TN in February and only $80! More information can be found here: http://www.thelibrarycollective.org/program/

The theme is libraries as curators and creators in the time of 3-d printing, makers, spaces, etc. I think it would be great to get in about building (curating) a game collection. I have background/experience working with the variety of vendors supporting IGD that want to see more libraries have more of their games. However, I would love one or two people who have circulation of games at their libraries since my collection still lives in my office and just comes out for events. Basically, my goal is to make games in libraries/education more and more mainstream, so I don't have to keep explaining myself forever. :)

If you are interested in working together you can message here or shoot me an email at Teresa.Slobuski@sjsu.edu.

    Cheers,

    Teresa

I think this is great, but since conference in February is not an option for me, I upvoted the session. I fully support the push to get more libraries to build circulating board game collections. I think that in a few years tabletop games can become about as ubiquitous in our collections as videogames are now, but it takes getting past that "What about all the pieces?" fear that a lot of people initially have.

Personally, I can vouch that circulating tabletop games has raised my library's esteem with many in our community, and the games are finally bringing in new visitors as word has gotten out. On top of that, the visibility of our board games has sparked a lot of conversations with parents and teachers who want games that are engaging and skill-enhancing for their kids and students but don't really know where to start--because of our selection of games, they can trust that the titles are vetted and can avoid making purchases that they'll regret.

Anyway, I hope you're able to make the presentation, and I look forward to seeing slides/notes.
