GameRT needs to be more active in supporting comments for exemptions for the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA), specifically section 1201. EFF has an article here

The deadline for comments this year is May 1st so we need comments by April 17th if you have them. We need examples of how DMCA has affected your library collection. Here are a few questions related to this exemption:

    • Are the video consoles that we want to circumvent no longer available in the market place?  Has the manufacturer abandoned the old console in preference for a new improved consoles that they expect consumers to buy instead?

    • Can old games only run on old consoles?  Or are the games new and improved?  Are the examples of games that are almost extinct (only a few remaining copies)?

    • Are older formats a problem? Is there a way to play them?

If you have examples of how section 1201 affects you adversely please send them to Carrie Russell (crussell at alawash.org) and copy me (diane.robson at unt.edu).

Even if we don't make this date all is not lost. This comes up every two years! EFF does a great job, but we need to be adding our voice to this for libraries every time it comes up.

If any of you are particularly keen on following copyright as it relates to games and gaming, let me know. We could use someone to lead this effort year round.

    Thanks,
    Diane

Can we repost this message elsewhere (e.g. facebook groups, listservs?) I think we might get good traction from people who aren't necessary in gameRT or super involved in connect.

    Yes, you can repost this.

We hope to get some information about DMCA and how it affects libraries as well as a comment form posted on the GameRT website. This probably won't happen in time for this round of comments.
