How did the Committee’s activities during this conference help to achieve your objectives and meet the timetable set by the Committee?

The winners and honorees were selected and the press release submitted by January 17 at 9:30 a.m. The committee worked all day Saturday with the goal of completing all work, including the final press release, by the end of Saturday.

How did the Committee’s activities help to further ALSC’s Strategic Plan? Specifically, which goal areas and objectives are addressed by these activities?

What problems did you encounter? What were the highlights of the committee meeting(s)?

  1. Question on books published simultaneously in English and also in Spanish where both versions are written by the author.  Should both be considered as two separate books?  The text may meet all qualifications in one language yet not the other.
  2. Time:  Working on the press release is time consuming.  The meeting times should reflect that part of the work.  It was useful to work on the press release for illustrator Friday immediately after the selection. We worked on the text winners Saturday immediately after selection.  Consolidated document Saturday.

Highlights:

Discussion:  Each member focused on the Latino cultural experience aspects as we discuss the books. Definition of culture. “The acts and activities shared by groups by people and expressed in social engagements that occur in the daily lives of groups and individuals.” (from Patti)

ALSC Support:  The support of the ALSC team was key the success of the committee’s work.  Everything was in place and instructions were clear and specific.  The translation of the press release was impeccable.  Special thanks to Macey Morales for working with us and the specific needs of the Belpre.

Do you have any recommendations for changes in your committee structure or charge?

            None

What are your objectives and timetable for work to do between now and the next conference?

The committee will work with the ALSC Office and REFORMA’s CAYASC in planning and executing the Belpre Celebracion to be held in Washington DC on Sunday, June 27th
