Please summarize work accomplished, decisions made and follow-up actions determined during this reporting period.
Committee members have begun to read and evaluate eligible books. The first round of suggestions were due in May and duly made. In addition, the following Zoom meetings were held: 1) An introductory session in which our Priority Group Chair spoke about his role and offered an advice, and in which our Cultural Competency Chair explained her role and spoke about how to evaluate the cultural components of eligible books. There are some subtleties, and we are grateful for her advice and ongoing support. 2) A quick session on how to submit suggestions with the new AirTable, as well as the rationale and protocols for suggestions in general for members who are new to serving on award committees. 3) A session in which we reviewed the terms, definitions, and criteria, focusing in particular on the difference between hard eligibility requirements and soft cultural requirements.
As the work has progressed, some complicated issues have emerged with regards to eligibility, and our Priority Group chair has been helping to untangle these with the help ALSC staff, particularly Ana.
