From Memory to Action: How can the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum work with the library community to spark critical thinking and civic engagement?

Description: In this session, the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum will share information about the upcoming national tour of the special exhibition, State of Deception: The Power of Nazi Propaganda. CIA’s Historical Collections: How You Can Access Declassified Primary Records & How You Can Help Improve Accessibility

Description: The Central Intelligence Agency’s Historical Collections Division is one of eight information review and release programs within the CIA’s Information Management Services. The scope of what we declassify is different from other programs (like FOIA and Executive Order Mandatory Declassification Review) because we choose our topics on a discretionary basis, and we focus on subjects and events whose release can fill important gaps in the historical record.

Transforming a Little Into a Lot: a cross-staffing initiative

Description: During times of budgetary constraints, paraprofessionals have an opportunity to assume greater leadership roles within the organization. At one large academic library, each member of the public services staff participated in the planning of an innovative cross-staffing program created to address staffing insufficiencies and bring about greater cohesion for public services staff. New Research on Digital Media Education

Description: The Massachusetts Aggression Reduction Center conducts research into how digital communications contributes to problems such as cyberbullying. Our research demonstrates how education about the unique nature of digital communications (e.g., cognitive priming; privacy perceptions; incomplete communications, etc.) can help reduce social problems between children, teens, and young adults. Librarians are frequently the providers of digital media education and this research will review both major findings and key points that need to be made.

The Plagiarism Spectrum

Description: The University of Toronto Scarborough Library was designed with high ceilings and open spaces to offer collaborative space for students to learn together. Unfortunately, this led to elevated noise levels and patron frustration. In surveys and focus groups students repeatedly demanded a quieter library. The UTSC library responded by launching the Quiet Library Campaign, which consisted of communicating a new quiet policy, designating quiet zones, and hiring quiet monitors to enforce policy and spread the word.

The 90-Second Newbery Film Festival

Description: The 90-Second Newbery Film Festival is an annual video contest in which young filmmakers create movies that tell the entire story of a Newbery award-winning book in 90 seconds or less. (Genre twists are encouraged – “Charlotte’s Web” in the style of a black-and-white horror movie, for instance.) The festival is screened in New York, Chicago, and Portland, hosted by James Kennedy with special guests like Jon Scieszka, Rebecca Stead, and Kate DiCamillo.

Technology Petting Zoos in Libraries

Description: The Library of Virginia (with support of IMLS) implemented a statwide technology petting zoo project. The goal of this project is that library staff will recognize these devices, what they do, how to use them, and feel comfortable explaining these uses to library patrons. The technology petting zoo session, designed by the Library of Virginia, will include an opportunity for hands-on activities with various devices.
