by Catherine Michael on Thu, Nov 7, 2013 at 07:59 am

Lisa R. just posted this to srrtac-l:

"Unique and vital perspectives are and have been offered up by underground newspapers, zines, and other radical publications. But alternative materials are for the most part not carried by libraries. Alycia Sellie comments on the value of alternative publications and describes behind-the-scenes efforts, by her and other activist librarians, to get them into library collections."

The Alternative Media Community is for librarians interested in the promotion of alternatives in publishing and the acquisition of alternative publishers' materials in libraries; challenges media consolidation; and promotes critical analysis of communication policies and practices. We believe that the "Library Bill of Rights" is realized by providing access to a diversity of media, including those that lie outside the interests of commercial information providers.

*Note: due to the lack of a convenor of the SRRT Alternative Media Task Force, the SRRT AMTF is dormant. If you are interested in restablishing the task force, please contact the Coordinator of SRRT.
