Event Framing and Enhancing Visual Literacy: Using the New ACRL Framework to Develop Effective Art Instruction

Through a lively interactive dialogue, experts will define, interpret, and enhance understanding of how to situate Visual Literacy Standards and the new Framework within varying arts instruction scenarios. Attendees will have the opportunity to hear examples, participate in developing tailored instruction sessions and activities for their art and visually focused curricula. Panelists from varying art and instruction backgrounds will provide feedback and demonstrate flexible and creative approaches by marrying aspects of the Standards and Framework.

Event Unlocking the Sciences: Collaborative Research with Community Engagement through Citizen Science

Citizen science is the practice of non-experts contributing to or engaging in scientific research across all disciplines. This panel, comprised of scientists and librarians, will highlight various citizen science projects and discuss how libraries can become involved and support these initiatives. For academic libraries, citizen science promotes science and information literacy among students as well as connects community members with researchers to bring about new discoveries.

Over the past decade, the “threshold concept” has emerged as a valuable tool for educators seeking to improve teaching and learning in higher education. The term refers to the core ideas and “ways of thinking and practicing” that are characteristic of a discipline but that students often find difficult to grasp. This program explores ways that librarians can use the threshold concept model to make information literacy instruction more relevant, meaningful, and exciting to students.

Event There's An App for That: The Use of Mobile Devices, Apps and Resources for Health and Sci-Tech Librarians and Their Users (ACRL STS & HSIG)

Mobile devices are changing how library users access information and applications (apps) for mobile devices are being released at a rapid rate. This program will discuss the range and functionality of mobile and tablet applications available to librarians and end users and how librarians can play an integral role in providing access to quality applications. The program will also address how mobile technologies can be implemented and offer a clearer understanding of the usefulness of these tools.

Guidelines for using apps for teaching and assessment of available apps will be also be presented.
