Event EBSS Online Learning Research Committee panel at Annual

by Laura Bonella on Mon, Jun 19, 2017 at 10:38 am

The EBSS Online Learning Research committee will not be meeting at annual. Instead, we will be sponsoring a panel/discussion group about using open educational resources to work with distance students. We hope you will join us for what should be an interesting discussion!

Here is the link to the event on the scheduler:

And here are the panelists and their topics. After the panelists speak, we will have plenty of time for discussion.

Dorinne Banks

Education Librarian, George Washington  University Libraries

EBSS Education Committee, Co-Chair, 2016-2018

Open Educational Resources are increasing in popularity in higher education and in the workflow of academic librarians.  If you have ever searched for an open textbook, OER digital object, or lesson plan on a specific topic, you know that it can be challenging to find one!  Unlike looking in your library catalog, or WorldCat to discover where a book on a specific topic is located, open educational resource--or, OER--searching can be time consuming.

My discussion will detail two initiatives that I have recently led--one with the EBSS Education Committee and the other at my institution, George Washington University (GW) Libraries’ OER Team.  I’ll share resources from both these projects which have helped in uncovering the proverbial OER needle in the haystack!

Cynthia Thomes

Reference and instruction librarian

University of Maryland University College

I'll be talking about my library’s role in helping my university (UMUC) eliminate for-cost textbooks from all classes.  I'll explain the process and timeline under which this project was achieved and will describe the OER and subscription resources that were used to replace textbooks.  I'll discuss what we learned from our experience and provide recommendations for those interested in implementing a similar project at their institution.

Lindsey Wharton

Extended Campus and Distance Services Librarian│Social Work Subject Librarian

Florida State University Libraries

Florida State University Libraries has worked closely with the Office of Distance Learning to embed library services into our course management system and online instruction design. Beginning in Fall 2016, the Distance Services Librarian and Scholarly Communication Librarian presented a focused session on utilizing open education resources in online courses as part of the Office of Distance Learning faculty development workshop series. As many faculty attending these workshops were in the midst of transitioning their courses from in-person to online or initially designing their online courses, an introduction to open education resources and the benefits of utilizing these resources to increase students’ information literacy skills proved valuable and timely for instructors. In addition, the OER Taskforce at FSU Libraries is in the midst of several exciting projects such as an Alternative Textbook Grant program and an upcoming #textbookbroke campaign. My discussion will detail the workshop, our current initiatives, and benefits of partnerships between scholarly communication librarians, distance services librarians, and offices of distance, distributed, or online learning to promote the adoption of open education resources.

Hope to see you there!

Online Doc 2011 ALA ORLC Meeting Minutes

by Lisa Baures on Fri, Jul 8, 2011 at 03:42 pm

ALA/EBSS Online Learning Research Committee Meeting

Date: June 25, 2011

Name of person submitting minutes: Mona Anne Niedbala

Members present: Lisa Baures, Veronica Bielat, Joshua Becker, Elaine Thornton, Mona Anne Niedbala

Members excused: Sharon Naylor, Katherine Dabbour (virtual member)

ALA/EBSS Online Learning Research Committee Meeting

Date: June 25, 2011

Name of person submitting minutes: Mona Anne Niedbala

Members present: Lisa Baures, Veronica Bielat, Joshua Becker, Elaine Thornton, Mona Anne Niedbala

Members excused: Sharon Naylor, Katherine Dabbour (virtual member)

Members absent: Amy Thornley, Travis Bonnett

Guests: Susan Wortman, Marilyn Nabua Ochoa

Agenda Items:

  • Welcome and Introductions: Mona welcomed members
  • Minutes from ALA midwinter 2011 were approved
  • Members discussed about current projects, recent accomplishments, presentations, and publications
  • OLRC Toolkit: Mona reorganized the “Learning Theories” section. Lisa suggested that the “Learning Theories” section should have two categories: theoretical and applied. Marilyn agreed and suggested to separate the content in two sections and label them for easy access. Lisa suggested creating links for cross-referencing. Mona suggested that the bibliography cover the content in all sections. Veronica will send citations to Josh; the “Bibliography” should contain two types of resources, subscription and free resources. Mona suggested the selection of a committee member for maintaining the Toolkit. Lisa proposed to move the Toolkit to Google Sites and have a backup. Google Sites will host the working documents and EBSS Wiki will be the publishing place.

It was decided that by the end of July the new committee members would select their Toolkit sections.

Veronica will find information about a tool that can be used to record changes made on the Toolkit page.

It was decided to make the “Online Discussion” a separate section of the Toolkit.

Members discussed about future projects: a committee presentation on the applications of the OLRC Toolkit and a how-to-do virtual book based on the Toolkit containing lesson plans, instructional design of learning objects, interactive elements, learning exercises, and rubrics. Lisa suggested that the main sections of the book should be pedagogy, how to implement it, and tools for delivering instruction.

Action items:

  • Designate a coordinator/coordinators who would maintain the toolkit

  • Talk with former and current members who want to maintain the content on individual pages of the Toolkit

  • Restructure Pedagogy and Online Conferencing sections of the Toolkit: separate the theoretical part from the practical part for the Pedagogy, Discussion, and Online Conferencing sections

  • New members will submit proposal for revisions until the end of July

  • Create another category for Online Discussion, remove it from the Pedagogy section, and have the link crossed-referenced to the Pedagogy section; in the Pedagogy section, have it crossed-referenced to the Online Discussion

  • Investigate the possibility of creating a presentation or current topic discussion on the applications of the Toolkit and on writing and publishing an interactive multimedia virtual book

Adjournment:

The meeting adjourned at 11:45 a.m.
