Discussion SRRT Action Council On-line Meeting

by LaJuan Pringle on Tue, Mar 2, 2010 at 04:25 pm

Greetings SRRT Membership!

It was agreed at the Boston Midwinter AC II meeting, Action Council would continue its discussion on the proposed by-law changes with regards to the SRRT newsletter.   This discussion included re-implementation of the editorial board as well as a focus on editorial policy.  Also to be discussed is the appointment of the editorial board members and subscriptions.  The nature of subscriptions have changed now that the newsletter is only available electronically.

The by-law changes were introduced as a method of formalizing how the newsletter currently functions.  An aspect of the editorial policy vigorously debated was a proposal to introduce certain topics in the newsletter as a means of providing SRRT membership with an overview of these issues.  The first topic on tap is Cuba.  Many questions have been raised as to why SRRT has opted to highlight Cuba when ALA has devoted a lot of time and resources towards this particular subject.  There are other questions concerning who makes the decisions as to how these topics are chosen for the newsletter and who should be consulted regarding this.

The meeting will be held on Saturday Apr 3 @ 4PM, E.S.T. (1PM, P.S.T.).  We are sending this message to membership in compliance with the 30 day advance notice clause in ALA’s e-participation bylaws.  We will launch this meeting using the OPAL web-based conference system.  The meeting will take place using a hybrid voice/chat forum.  A computer that has access to the Internet is necessary in order to participate.   If you have access to computer speakers and a headset with microphone, this will ensure that you are able to participate using the voice function of OPAL.  However, if you do not have access to speakers or a headset, you’ll still be able to participate using the chat function.

There are 100 slots accessible to us for this meeting.  So I hope to that many of you that have never been to a conference will take the opportunity to drop in and perhaps weigh in on this conversation.   Attached you'll find documents giving a brief history of the newsletter and outlining the proposed outline changes.  If you have any questions, please feel free to ask.  I hope you'll consider attending this meeting to catch your Action Council at work.  Thanks!
