Greetings Cartographic Resources Colleagues,

Description:
The Cartographic Resources Cataloging Interest Group meeting is an open discussion session for addressing topics of interest to the cartographic and geospatial resources cataloging community. This is a great forum for posing questions to and exchanging ideas with members of the cartographic resources cataloging community. Three presenters will share their experiences with Cartographic Cataloging Standards: Historical, Contemporary, and Forthcoming:

Presenters:
Nancy Kandoian—Descriptive Cataloging of Rare Materials (Cartographic) (DCRM(C)) An Overview
Map Cataloger, the Lionel Pincus and Princess Firyal Map Division, Stephen A. Schwarzman Building, at the New York Public Library.

Seanna Tsung—Current G&M RDA Philosophies as reflected in the Cartographic Resources Manual
Senior Cataloging Specialist, the Library of Congress, in the Geography & Map Division.

Nate Trail— BIBFRAME A Briefing, an Overview and an Update
Digital Project Coordinator, librarian, and programmer at the Library of Congress, active in Library Standards work, such as BIBFRAME, METS, MODS, PREMIS, and ALTO data standards. Worked on the Linked Data site id.loc.gov and is leading the team developing a new vocabulary and serialization for library data compatible with the Web, at bibframe.org.

Notes from the session will be posted to various resources and the MAGIRT email list to be shared by everyone soon after the conference, as well as printed in the next issue of our newsletter, base line.

I hope to see many of you at our special session in San Francisco!

Please join us for the 2015 ALA Midwinter meeting of the:

ALCTS-CaMMS/MAGIRT Cartographic Resources Cataloging Interest Group

When: Sunday, February 1, 2015 from 8:30 AM to 10:00 AM (EST)

Location: McCormick Place Convention Center, Room W175a, Chicago, Illinois

 Discussion topics will include:

•           Government Printing Office--Looking into hosting ... from the USGS. Would libraries be interested in such a project? What would be the cataloging concerns?

 •             We have a "test case" for proposing a new Relationship Designator with accompanying definition that could be used to learn how the process of submitting new or changed RD proposals for RDA works. Queens Public Library is using "landowner" in some of their historic cadastral records. We could possibly create a template for the process that anyone could use for either submitting a new RD or asking for changes to an existing one in RDA. Has anyone tried submitting a new cartographic relationship designator? Is there interest in formalizing a process such as this via MAGIRT's Cataloging and Classification Committee or another unit?

 •             Who is using RDA now?

 •             Are folks aware of the recent change in PCC policy regarding the requirement to upgrade an existing heading in LCAF from AACR2 form (code "c" in the Rules fixed field) to RDA form (code "z" in the Rules fixed field) when encountered in one's work?

Please feel free to bring other cartographic resources cataloging topics of interest and we will try to cover them as time permits. As usual, notes from the session will be shared widely after the meeting.

The Cartographic Resources Cataloging Interest Group meeting is an open discussion session for addressing topics of interest to the cartographic and geospatial resources cataloging community.  All Conference attendees are welcome to join and participate.

I hope to see many of you in Chicago!
