    POSITION DESCRIPTION:


    Comprehensive research university library at America’s creative crossroads in an affordable and vibrant city seeks candidates with energy, creativity, flexibility, and strong commitment to public services for the position of Special Collections Librarian in the UMKC University Libraries.
    The Special Collections Librarian implements major components of the UMKC University Libraries strategic plan to embed Special Collections into student and faculty success. This position has primary responsibility for:



    • Providing reference service for all types of users of LaBudde Special Collections;

    • Initiating or supplying library instruction to support the UMKC curriculum;

    • Processing incoming manuscript collections;

    • Managing the daily operation of the LaBudde Special Collections service desk, including supervision of two staff and additional student assistant positions

    • Pursuing personal professional development and contribute to the profession.

    • The position reports to the Assistant Dean of Special Collections and Archives, and will join a unit that encompasses LaBudde Special Collections, the Marr Sound Archives, the Gay and Lesbian Archive of Mid-America, Digital Special Collections, and UMKC University Archives.


    QUALIFICATIONS:



    • ALA-accredited MLS or Master’s degree in Archives.

    • Experience working in special collections and/or archives.

    • Supervisory experience

    • Demonstrated knowledge of archival processing practices, understanding of archival standards including DACS and EAD, and awareness of national issues and trends in archives.

    • Demonstrated ability to work positively and productively with diverse constituencies in a dynamic environment.

    • Evidenced ability to work in a collegial fashion with undergraduate, professional and graduate students, faculty, researchers, alumni and community members.

    • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a team-based, service-oriented environment.

    • Evidence of professional initiative, mature judgment.

    • Excellent oral, written, planning, and interpersonal skills.

    • Potential to meet promotion requirements in non-tenure track appointment.


    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:



    • Knowledge of Kansas City history

    • High density automated storage and retrieval system experience

    • Grant-writing experience

    • Exhibit curation, fabrication, and/or installation experience
